Pend d’Oreille Review

April 18, 1921 – MAMMOTH STILL TAKEN

State constabulary officers today brought in the largest moonshine outfit and most complete still ever captured in Idaho. The plant was found at daybreak two miles northwest of Glengary at the bottom of a canyon, the paraphernalia covered by tar paper extended from posts. There were 600-700 gallons of mash, 300 pounds of sugar, 300-400 pounds of corn meal, 350 feet of hose, and 18 or 20 barrels. The officers went by launch to the head of Bottle bay at midnight and left at dawn to reconnoiter the peninsula. Two men were taken into custody, but others escaped.

TO PLANT 325,000 PINE SEEDLINGS

The local forest service office sent half a dozen men to the west fork of Elk creek, east of Lake Pend d’Oreille, to pitch camp for a crew of 50 to be sent in on a project in which 325,000 yellow pine seedlings will be planted over 500 acres, eight feet apart. The area is part of the territory burned in the disastrous fires of 1910, the worst in the history of the Pend d’Oreille forest, and the ground has since been entirely barren.
