Duo honored by Elks for academic achievements

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for the past few months for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.

The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.

Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.

Among those being honored are Saedey Christy, Lake Pend Oreille High School; and Matthew Waggoner, Sandpoint High School.

Saedey Christy

Lake Pend Oreille High School has recognized Saedey Christy for Elks Student of the Month.

The daughter of Charlyvada and James Christy, Saedey's ambition, passion and focus is graduation, which will come to fruition June 10.

Saedey's attendance is excellent, maintaining 98% with a 3.0 GPA. She receives WOW stickers from her teachers frequently, commending her work and attitude. In addition, Saedey achieved Student of the Month award for "kindness." Staff and students alike can attest to her kind and gentle demeanor.

When it comes to art, Saedey is ready and willing. She volunteered for POAC's Art Walk and recently entered a piece in the POAC High School Student Art Show. Her favorite mediums are pen and ink, pencil, and dyes.

As a forestry student this semester, Saedey will participate with her classmates at the Idaho State Forestry contest in May.

Saedey intends on enrolling in either the Seattle or San Francisco Art Institute.

Matthew Waggoner

Matthew Waggoner is a Sandpoint High School senior who has a 4.245 weighted GPA, ranked 17th in his class.

Throughout his high school career, he has been a bass in the Sandpoint High School Men's Choir and has played clarinet and tenor saxophone in the Sandpoint High School Symphonic and Jazz bands.

He plans on attending the University of Idaho in the fall and majoring in broadcasting and digital media, planning to get a job in the entertainment industry in the future.
