Kinderhaven’s Tour of Trees is back for the holiday season. Like last year, the socially distanced event can be found throughout the downtown area now through Dec. 12.
Tree decorating will wrap up this weekend, and online bidding will begin Wednesday, Dec. 8.
Beyond trees, other events in this year’s fundraising event include an online silent auction and giving tree. Both are located at Kinderhaven headquarters, 113 Main Street, for those interested in viewing silent auction items or snagging an ornament from the giving tree.
Items purchased for the giving tree can be dropped off Kinderhaven headquarters, or mailed to P.O. Box 2097 in Sandpoint.
“Our community is so giving,” said Terri Palmer, one of the fundraising coordinators for Kinderhaven. “Every single year we make our goal.”
Although Kinderhaven gets funding from the state, it only accounts for about 15% of its budget. Kinderhaven serves as an emergency shelter and group home for abused and neglected children, and relies heavily on local donations.
According to Palmer, Kinderhaven’s next goal is to construct a boys home.
“You can’t kick these boys out on the street,” she said. “We have a more nurturing atmosphere for them.”
Other events in this year’s fundraiser are the Slip & Sleigh raffle and virtual paddle raise. Anyone interested in making a monetary donation will be matched by Ting Mobile up to $5,000. The Sip & Sleigh raffle, also called the “booze sled,” contains hundreds of dollars worth of wine, spirits, and foods that pair with them. Raffle tickets are $25 for one or $100 for five.
“This one event keeps the doors open,” Palmer said. “Our community rocks, I’ll tell ya.”
