Chirping birds herald spring

The birds chirping in the trees are the best indication that we are on the threshold of spring. The snow is quickly melting and will soon be gone.

90 Years Ago — 1931

Airport sees renewed activity

The airport committee is about to start work on the field. The committee, through the courtesy of F. A. Hanson, county commissioner, has obtained the services of the county caterpillar and Joe Gumaer. The cate will be used to level out the field. Maurice Lathrop will drive the city tractor to pull stumps.

80 Years Ago — 1941

Beaver coming back

Henry Lund reports that beaver have again taken up their abode on Saddler Creek. Years ago this stream was filled with fish, but with the cutting of timber and the disappearance of the beaver, the stream has been dry except for a few holes. It is now believed that if the beavers are allowed to increase and are unharmed that the stream will again come back and afford additional fishing.

70 Years Ago — 1951

‘Popeye’ buys Ace Tavern

The transaction was completed this week, Tuesday, whereby ‘Popeye’ Rose purchased Ace’s Tavern in Priest River.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Kaniksu Clinic ready to serve

Formal opening of the newly-completed medical building, The Kaniksu Clinic, will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, when Mayor Mike Venovich will present the keys to Dr. James Richey, a dentist. The community projects was started three years ago.

50 Years Ago — 1971

Sled dog races draw 70 teams

A Waterville dentist captured top honors in the two-day, internationally-sanctioned sled dog races held Saturday and Sunday on meadows south of Nordman. Dr. John Rudd placed first and Art Christensen of Jefferson, Ore., second, in the Class A event over 19.2 miles. 70 dog sled teams competed in the event.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Road feasible but expensive

A federal study completed for the Priest Lake Chamber of Commerce indicates that a Priest Lake-Sandpoint cutoff road is possible, but funding for the project appears to be very much in doubt. The study indicates that reconstruction of Baldy Road-Happy Gap is the most cost-effective.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Downtown trees uprooted

Vandalism to two trees in downtown Priest River has angered members of the Priest River Chamber of Commerce, and a reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of responsible parties.

20 Years Ago — 2001

Woody will honor log drives

The three people attending the first Timber Day planning meeting chose “Honoring the Great Log Drives” as the theme of the 2001 celebration and issued the call for representative art work. This year ‘Woody” must be incorporated in some way in the design. (Editor's note: Woody is a cartoon figure of a block of wood doffing a hard hat).
