POST FALLS — Sandpoint wrestling saw a jam-packed week of action come to a close on Saturday.

The Bulldogs took part in the second day of the annual River City Duals tournament at Post Falls High. On Friday, SHS went 2-1 in duals to advance to the silver championship bracket Saturday.

Originally, head coach Jake Stark believed Sandpoint was opening the day against rival Bonners Ferry, but instead the Bulldogs drew Weiser, a top-ranked 3A team.

SHS went toe-to-toe with the Wolverines and won four of the first six bouts. Unfortunately, Weiser dominated the heavyweight bouts to capture a 49-33 dual victory.

"Almost every match was back and forth," Stark said about the battle with Weiser. "I felt like we wrestled really good in the morning, we were definitely ready."

Forrest Ambridge, Shane Sherrill and Jacob Crum all earned victories by pin. Trevan Adam won his match 8-4, and Jacob Albany and Tanner Dickson accepted forfeits.

The Wolverines claimed seven bouts by pin.

With the loss, the Bulldogs moved to the silver bracket third-place match to face — you guessed it — Bonners Ferry.

Sandpoint had been chomping at the bit to get another crack at the Badgers ever since losing the "B" Cup at Bonners Ferry in December.

The Bulldogs got their shot and they capitalized on it, edging out the Badgers 48-42. Bonners Ferry won the "B" Cup by the exact same score.

Stark said it felt great to get revenge.

"I don't know if that's our thing this year where we're just down and then we comeback ... but we'll take it," he said. "We don't get the "B" Cup back, but we got the respect back."

Adam, Ambridge, Dickson and Carson Laybourne all won their matches by pin, and Albany, Owen Wimmer, Matt Thurlow and Seth Kizanis all accepted victories by forfeit.

The dual allowed Sandpoint to secure third in the silver bracket and seventh overall at the River City Duals.

From Thursday to Saturday, the Bulldogs competed in seven duals and went 3-4 against some of the best the state has to offer. SHS was also missing a few key guys from their typical lineup at the River City Duals.

This allowed some younger, less experienced wrestlers to step up for the Bulldogs, including Wimmer, a sophomore at 182 pounds.

"He's wrestling strong," Stark said about Wimmer. "He's a big, strong kid and I'm glad we got a couple extra guys deep at each weight."

Stark was also impressed with Crum, a senior, and Adam, a team captain, who went 4-1 at the tournament.

"Trevan Adam really stepped up as our leader, our captain and did a good job this weekend," Stark said.

Stark said it was nice to claim third in the silver bracket, but this past week was all about getting time on the mat.

"This mat time is paying off for us," he said, "and every match we get, we are getting better and better."

The Bulldogs head to Coeur d'Alene, the fifth-ranked team in 5A, for a dual at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
