The West Bonner County School District trustees conducted an evaluation pf Superintendent Joe Malleta’s performance. At its conclusion, members agreed they want Malleta stay on for another year. Said Board Chairman Leonard Parenteau, “We think he’s doing a good job, and the district is marking progress.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Coy retires

Jerry Coy is retiring as chief of the Priest River Volunteer Fire Department on Wednesday, Jan. 31. The clerk’s office will throw a farewell reception in Coy’s honor that day from 2-5 p.m.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Mall celebrates anniversary

Priest River’s Rivertown Mall is observing its first anniversary this week, and the Mall committee has decided to celebrate the event. Merchants have gotten together to invite residents to visit the mall to see the variety of business and services offered.

50 Years Ago — 1971

‘Mr. Conservation’ named

A beautiful engraved plaque was presented to Tony Jachetta by the Priest River Wildlife Federation as its first recipient of the “Mr. Conservation” award. Roger Gregory made the presentation at a dinner meeting at Eng’s in Newport.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Veltri promoted

Emil Veltri, former resident of Priest River, has been promoted to plant superintendent of the Coeur d’Alene unit of the Diamond National Corp. He graduated from the local high school in 1937.

70 Years Ago — 1951

Groundbreaking set

Groundbreaking ceremonies at the Albeni Falls dam site will start at 11 a.m. Saturday. Welcome will be extended by Robert Gill, president of the Priest River Chamber of Commerce, and Fred Wolf of Newport will be master of ceremonies.

80 Years Ago — 1941

An outing on skis

The Stewart brothers, Dean and Neil, and Charles Wickware drove to the experiment station Sunday and from there skied to the summit of Looking Glass (Gisborne) Mountain. It took them about five hours to go up and a little over an hour to make the return trip. The distance is estimated to be about 12 miles.

Boom year

In gathering data from local merchants on business transacted during 1930, the Times has made the startling discovery that in spite of the widespread cry of “hard times,” business was on a level with the boom year of 1929.
