COEUR d'ALENE — Injuries and illness are starting to catch up with the Bulldogs.

Sandpoint wrestling was once again shorthanded on Wednesday night at Coeur d'Alene and the Vikings capitalized, capturing a 75-12 dual victory.

Head coach Jake Stark said he is hoping to get back some of his key wrestlers soon, but right now the Bulldogs are just scrambling to fill a varsity lineup.

"We're kind of on thin ice," Stark said. "Our JV guys are stepping up and filling the spots, but they just don't have the experience yet to fill in. But they are doing as best as they can and we got to get our stuff together before the end of the year. Luckily, there's still enough time."

Darrian Resso, Tanner Dickson, Tag Benefield, Blake Sherrill and Shane Sherrill were just some of the wrestlers that didn't compete for Sandpoint against Coeur d'Alene.

The Vikings won 10 matches by pin and two by forfeit. Forrest Ambridge and Matt Thurlow accepted forfeits for the Bulldogs at 113 and 220 pounds respectively.

The closest match of the night came at 195 pounds as Austin Smith fell to Coeur d'Alene's Angelo Miller 9-5.

"I felt like we came out with some good intensity," Stark said about the match. "We were working hard, things just didn't go our way. Coeur d'Alene beat us to the punch and made it a long night."

Despite losing by pin, Stark said freshman Andrew Duke gave the Bulldogs a spark in his bout at 98 pounds.

"He's giving up a lot of weight and he wrestled his little heart out," Stark said. "He kind of inspired the whole team to come out with a little bit of fire and we did, we just couldn't hold onto it."

The Bulldogs will compete in the Clearwater Classic on Friday and Saturday at Lewiston High School. The dual tournament starts at 3 p.m. Friday.
