USFS temporarily closing Lunch Peak Lookout road

| July 3, 2021 1:00 AM

Forest Service Road 1091, which accesses Lunch Peak and the popular Lunch Peak Lookout cabin rental, will temporarily close for road reconstruction and improvement work during parts of July and August. During the closure, the rental will be temporarily unavailable.

The road will be closed for 3.9 miles starting from its junction with Forest Service Road 275 and terminating at the peak, USFS officials said in a press release. The closure will remain in place during construction activities to provide for the safety of both visitors and workers. Operations are expected to begin in mid-July and last through mid-August. Contractors will implement several upgrades to improve user safety and prevent resource damage, including new drainage features to reduce sedimentation and control erosion.

The Lunch Peak Lookout is about 28 miles by car northeast of Sandpoint on the Sandpoint Ranger District. Due to its elevation, Forest Service officials said road work cannot take place until summer when the ground is dry enough.

The Forest Service appreciates the public’s patience and tolerance of this temporary closure in support of long-term improvements to this public road.
