SANDPOINT – What’s 150 pounds, mild mannered, and rich in history?

Spoiler, it’s not your grandma – but the equally as lovable Newfoundland breed.

Over 50 dogs with their two-legged friends will be unleashed upon the 4th annual Inland Northwest Newfapalooza.

The event will feature a dog obstacle course, as well as an appearance from speaker Liz Ishler, a Missoula, Montana-based trainer. There will also be a barbecue for non-canine attendees. The event is organized by Whisky Jack Newfoundland Kennels and is intended for fellow Newfie lovers to share their knowledge with each other about the breed. Local pet and feed stores are sponsoring the event located at 121 Whiskey Jack Road, in Sandpoint.

Described as sweet, patient, and devoted by the American Kennel Club, “Newfie’s” are from the northern Canadian province of Newfoundland. Thanks to their partially webbed feet, Newfs are known for their strong swimming abilities. The breed is also known for its calm and kind temperament, thick double coat, and usefulness in hunting and fishing.

More knowledge about the Newfoundland will be available at Saturday’s event, which is free and open to the public.

The best part is, you don’t need a Newfie in order to attend.
