CLARKSTON, Wash. — The Sandpoint golf team battled wet, cold and windy conditions at the Moscow Invitational on Monday afternoon.

Head coach Mike Deprez said the weather impacted the scores of all six teams at the tournament and the pin placements at Red Wolf Golf Club didn't help much either.

"They were a handful," he said about the conditions of the first six holes.

Despite the obstacles, the girls were able to place second as a team with a 408, nine strokes behind first-place Coeur d'Alene. CeCe Deprez shared medalist honors with the Vikings' Brianna Priest by shooting a 93.

Hattie Larson came in sole third with a 95. Camille Neuder shot a 104 and Annaby Kanning recorded a 116.

Deprez said the girls did a great job of weathering the tough conditions on an unfamiliar course, especially CeCe, Larson and Neuder.

Moscow finished fifth with a team score of 463 and Lakeland was one stroke behind them in sixth.

The boys took fifth as a team (384), but edged out district rival Lakeland by 21 strokes. Deprez said this is the first time he can remember in the last four years that the boys have finished better than the Hawks at a tournament. They were also just 16 strokes behind Moscow.

"For the boys, it was a great shake-out round," he said. "The boys got used to seeing a certain pace of greens that is hopefully going to be very familiar to them once we get back from spring break."

Harley Wilks led the way with an 84, tied for the sixth best score.

"It was a good score with a lot of challenging winds out there," Deprez said.

Darren Bailey shot a 96, Dawson Owens had a 101, Jacob Gove recorded a 103 and Connor Bird finished with a 105.

Deprez said the last three spots on the boys varsity team are still up for grabs and he expects Merek Bauck, Will Hurst and Jake Samuels to make their cases in the coming weeks.

"The very nature of competition will probably breed sharper games out of all of those guys," he said.

After the tournament, Deprez said the team talked about decision making on the course and how they can save strokes moving forward.

"Overall, I'm extremely happy because they all walked away saying, 'You know what, we actually hit the ball pretty well,'" he said.

The Bulldogs head to The Links Golf Course in Post Falls on Thursday for a challenge match with Coeur d'Alene.
