Game warden plants 80,000 rainbow in area waters

100 Years Ago — 1921

Planting fish

Game Warden Tickett of Sandpoint came over Tuesday morning with 80,000 rainbow trout from the hatchery. Stanley Jones and Frank Knowlton went with him to Upper West Branch to plant them in Squaw Valley. Stanley Jones donated the use of his truck.

90 Years Ago — 1931

Unidentified body fund in river

The body of an elderly man was recovered from the Pend Oreille River Tuesday by Pend Oreille County Sheriff William Giles of Newport, Wash. The body was discovered in the slough downstream from the interstate bridge. It is believed the man, who has not yet been identified, took his own life, as his overcoat, billfold containing about $35, and an Elgin watch were found on a stump nearby.

80 Years Ago — 1941

School opened Monday with Supt. Charles M. Barker in charge at the high school, and E.G. Sarbach as principal of the grade school. The enrollment is considerably lower this year than last year, 163 students being enrolled.

70 Years Ago — 1951

Nelson top log roller

Laurence Nelson proved that Priest River has some expert log rollers Monday when he walked, or rather rolled away, with the $50 winner-take-all prize in the log rolling contest at the loggers’ celebration in St. Maries. The contest was conducted on the elimination basis with 11 men, five pairs, competing. The competition soon narrowed down to three men, with Mr. Nelson taking first.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Dedication of the new Priest Lake Elementary School had been set for Sept. 27. A number of state officials will attend the ceremonies.

50 Years Ago — 1971

The annual fall foray of the Spokane Mushroom Club will be held Sept. 18 at Priest Lake.

40 Years Ago — 1981

Hot time at fire hall

There'll be a hot time in Priest River Sept. 12 when the Priest River Fire Department holds its third annual fireman’s dance at the fire hall on Cedar Street. The place will be jumping with western music provided by Priest River’s Kearbey Klan, and when you’re not dancing you can bid on items at the auction to be held the same evening.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Brooks is junior steer rider champ

Mauri Brooks may be in only her second year of rodeo riding, but it didn’t take her long to make her mark in rodeo competition. The 12-year-old Priest River girl emerged as the champion steer rider in the junior girls’ division of the Eastern Washington Association finals, held Aug. 16-18 in Spokane.

20 Years Ago — 2001

Student killed on Hwy. 57

A memorial service will be held at the high school for a 17-year-old Priest River girl who was killed Friday morning when the car she was driving ran off the road along Highway 57 south of Outlet Bay Road. Speraw would have started her senior year on Tuesday.
