Priest River community welcomes Diamond’s plans

100 Years Ago — 1921

Joseph Bossio buried, crushed

The community was shocked Wednesday evening by the accidental death of Joseph Bossio, which occurred when a 12-foot section of sewer ditch in which he was working caved in on him. Rescuers began to dig him out, when in a few minutes it was discovered he was still alive. He was released about 5:25 and taken to the Priest River Hospital where he died at 5:55 p.m.

90 Years Ago — 1931

Café changes hands

The Club Café, a restaurant of high standing, came under new management when Lars Swanberg and Frank Naccarato completed a deal through which they became new owners.

80 Years Ago — 1941

No apples like them

The Peninsula is fast coming to the front as a fruit-growing region. Ed Daily has been experimenting for some time with seedlings, and he now has several varieties of new apples, nothing like them to be found in the U. S.

70 Years Ago — 1951

Sam Pagnotta passes away

Sam Pagnotta died Wednesday morning at the Newport hospital following a brief illness. He had been found in a dazed condition Monday near his woodshed, where he has fallen. He was taken to the hospital immediately. Mr. Pagnotta came here from Grimaldi, Italy, in 1897 and has worked and been in business here since that time.

60 Years Ago — 1961

Benefit scheduled for clinic

A benefit dinner-dance for the Kaniksu Clinic, Inc., medical and dental fund will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Elks Club in Sandpoint. The chefs will be Mike Maio and Earle Clintsman of Priest River. Tickets will be $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for children. The menu will be fried chicken and spaghetti with all the trimmings. Music for dancing afterward will be furnished by the Burns Brothers Orchestra. The Kaniksu Clinic, a community project in Priest River, was completed in February of this year.

50 Years Ago — 1971

Area welcomes Diamond’s plans

Area residents hailed the announcement by Diamond International of plans for construction of a multi-million-dollar sawmill-planer complex to replace its present manufacturing facilities at Albeni Falls.

40 Years Ago — 1981

First snow reported

The late surge of summer weather ended Saturday, as a storm pass through the area, dumping large amounts of rain and cooling temperatures from the low 90’s to the 60’s and 70’s. On Tuesday, the first snow of the season reportedly fell on Gleason Mountains.

30 Years Ago — 1991

Extra students prompt levy

More students than expected caused the Bonner County School District to approve an override levy at a special school board meeting Sept. 7. The 286,658.31-levy will help fund the costs associated with 139 additional students not expected by the district.

20 Years Ago — 2001

Klondyke Bar owner Bruno Williams and cook Marnice Foote whipped up hundreds of hotcakes and scores of sausages during a Sunday pancake feed to benefit the drive for a shed to house the new Westside Fire Department truck in Laclede. More than $1,350 was raised from the benefit.
