BOISE – Idaho Sen. Jim Woodward, R-Sagle, was named an Ag All Star by Food Producers of Idaho on Wednesday.
Along with 13 other legislators, the award is given to elected officials based on their voting record relating to agricultural policy.
“I’m happy to support agriculture in the state of Idaho,” Woodward said Monday. “I grew up in the Kootenai Valley and in the Sandpoint area also. If there’s anything we can do policy-wise to help the agricultural family in Idaho, I’m always happy to do that.”
This is Woodward’s second year being named an All Star. The 22nd annual All Star Banquet was held Wednesday celebrating legislators’ voting records from the 2021 legislative session.
FPI represents over 45 different agriculture commodity and farm organizations in Idaho.
“Ag All Star legislators are important to Idaho’s agriculture and natural resource industries. The award has been presented for the last twenty-two legislative sessions,” said the organization on Monday.
One of Idaho’s leading industries, agriculture brought $8 billion into the state’s economy in 2018 alone, according to the Idaho Department of Agriculture. Idaho leads the country in peppermint, trout, and potato production.
“Across the state, agriculture contributes so much to the economy through the Snake River Plain. And throughout the mountainous regions too we still have a large amount of agriculture thriving in Idaho,” Woodward said.
Ag All Stars are given an Idaho license plate that says “AL STR,” which Woodward has displayed in his office in Boise. Every following year a senator receives the award, a mini license plate with the year is given.
When asked if he would put it on his car, Woodward laughed and said, “No, that plate just hangs on my wall in the Senate.”
Woodward is serving his second term in the Idaho Senate, holding a seat in the education, and finance committees. The second regular session of the 66th legislature began on Jan. 10, and will continue through March.
