Spartans place 4th in silver bracket at River City Duals

POST FALLS — The Priest River wrestling team finished fourth in the silver bracket in the River City Duals this past weekend.

The Spartans amassed a 2-3 record in duals.

"We were missing two or three guys in our lineup due to sickness, so that kind of hurt us a little bit," head coach Quinton Holbrook said, "but for the most part I thought they did really good, and they wrestled tough."

The Spartans were forced to forfeit at two weight classes throughout the tourney, but that didn't stop them from racking up victories.

Priest River opened the event Friday with a dual against Meridian, the defending 5A state champions. They fell 77-9, but Keith Poirier earned a quality win at 126 pounds by pinning Zac Kimes, who placed fifth at 113 pounds in the 5A state tournament last year.

Poirier went 5-0 over the course of the tourney, earning three wins by pin and two by forfeit.

"He did great, he's always done great," Holbrook said. "This is going to be a great year for him."

Caeden McLaimtaig also snagged a 6-4 sudden victory at 132 pounds.

The Spartans capped the first day of competition with a 48-36 victory over Lewis and Clark from Spokane, securing a spot in the silver bracket.

Colm McLaimtaig (106), Garrett Reynolds (120), Charles Bennett (145), Austin Reeves (152) and Bradley Bennett (160) all grabbed pins.

In the quarterfinals Saturday, the Spartans took down Eureka (Mont.) 51-27 with three pins and five forfeits.

Priest River squared off with Lakeland in the semis and suffered a 53-33 defeat. The Spartans wrapped up the event with a 51-36 loss to 5A Rocky Mountain in the third-place match.

Colm McLaimtaig, Poirier, Landon Reynolds (182), Matyus McLain (195) and Caleb Grow (285) secured pins in the match.

Colm McLaimtaig went 4-1 with three pins and Holbrook said the freshman got a good feel for the competition he could encounter in his weight class at state.

"He's really coming together," he said about Colm.

McLain also went 4-1, and Garrett Reynolds, Bradley Bennett and Caeden McLaimtaig all finished with a 3-2 mark.

Priest River heads to Bonners Ferry on Thursday for the Intermountain League Duals. On Friday, the team will travel to Thompson Falls for three duals before participating in the Ted Kato Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
