POAC hosting 'Artist's Choice' exhibit Friday

| January 20, 2022 1:00 AM

Pend Oreille Arts Council is hosting a reception for its annual Artist’s Choice exhibit on Friday.

The reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Columbia Bank Community Plaza.

Artist's Choice is an open-themed exhibit with a varied display of work by local artists. Visitors will enjoy a wide range of subject matter and mediums, with everything from a baboon to a bison.

Betty Billups, a long-time POAC member, chose to show “The Lilac — Once Upon a Time in Sandpoint”. This nostalgic piece is sure to speak to Sandpoint locals and the viewer can almost feel the sun and smell spring.

"My goal is to unveil the beauty in our world, so often a mere moment that I was blessed to capture, through my paintings,” Billups wrote in an email about the piece.

Completely by accident, two artists chose pieces depicting elephants. Jenni Barry's piece, “Elefante”, is a painting of fabric made using the Japanese process called Kimekomi. Candace D Hultberg-Bennet chose two photographs of elephants.

"Photos capturing two of only 115 specially desert-adapted African elephants (Loxodonta africana) found along the famed Skeleton Coast in the ephemeral rivers of Namibia, Africa. “Daaronder” (Afrikaans for “Underneath”) captures the oldest breeding bull in the herd, his age of almost 50 years can be seen on the deep lines of his feet. “Troos van die Dag” (Afrikaans for “Solace of the Day”) is the matriarch of the herd and is responsible for the cohesion of the group," Bennet said in her artist statement.

A striking ocean landscape by Tessema C, “Midnight Surf”, takes the viewer to a fantasy location.

"I am happiest when I can be at the ocean,” the artist said in a statement. “I love to try to bring out the memories, smells, and waves breaking. The light through the waves was always fascinating to me. I grew up near Puget Sound as a child. Even the evening hours were enchanting as the moonlight danced on the breakers."

Visit the reception for a chance to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of art and conversation. The Columbia Bank Community Plaza is located at 231 N. Third Ave.
