Chamber honors Schweitzer as June’s top business

Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort opened in December 1963 and, since that time, has continued to grow and expand over the years, becoming one of the top family friendly ski destinations in the Pacific Northwest. With 2,900 acres of terrain, it is the largest ski area in Idaho and Washington.

When the pandemic hit, they were faced with some difficult choices on how to safely operate and made the best decisions possible so that the public could still access the mountain with all of its great outdoor activities. They had a record year for local season pass sales and over the last season had a record number of over all visits.

As with businesses locally and nationwide, Schweitzer has struggled with staffing but has gotten proactive in attracting talent. With the number one order of business being employee housing and immediately started doing something about it.

Schweitzer opened their first employee housing property on Hemlock Street in Sandpoint last fall and are now working on their next employee housing development in Ponderay which will include over 80 new units.

“Growing, expanding, and adjusting to the times the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate Schweitzer Mountain resort as the June Business of the Month,” chamber officials said in a press release.
