Mitchell honored for academic achievements

Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 recently announced Josie Mitchell as a student of the month for Lake Pend Oreille High School.

To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.

The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.

Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third largest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.

Since enrolling at LPO as a sophomore with a 1.0 GPA, Josie Mitchel maintained a 4.0 GPA, quite a commendable fete. Josie is well-liked by all, students and staff and school officials said it was common that Mitchell would be the last student at school completing assignments. The daughter of Amanda Mitchell, staff and students described her as friendly, helpful, selfless, altruistic and with an empathic nature that is infectious.

Josie works at the YMCA as a lead lifeguard. In her spare time she enjoys hiking and swimming with her dogs, Bella and Diesel.

Josie has a propensity for science. She was a student in forestry and attended the Idaho State Forestry Contest. Doing spring quarter, she worked as a teacher's assistant in the Introduction to Chemistry class and a student in the Water Science class preparing for the Youth Water Summit/The Confluence Project at the UI. She was chosen by Brenda Woodward to attend the prestigious UI Women in Science and Engineering event which is an honor and privilege.

Her senior project is on stormwater pollution, management and advocacy. Josie has been accepted to the Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minnesota, to pursue her lofty ambition in watershed and water quality science.
