MERIDAN — The Sandpoint girls golf team finished seventh overall at the Class 4A Idaho State golf tournament on Tuesday at the Lakeview Golf Club.

“They learned how to handle tournament play,” Assistant Sandpoint golf coach Erin Roos said. “They dealt with the adversity of a golf course and competed under pressure with courage and class.”

Despite the second round evoking emotions out of the Bulldogs, they know what they need to work on, according to Roos.

“While there are always a few tears, there was way more resolve, maturing and growth,” she said. “All their fundamentals are essentially there. They really only need to continue to play tournament golf.”

The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a final score of 850. The second round was hard on Sandpoint. It decreased its score by 12 strokes.

“There was water all over and the greens were extremely fast,” Sandpoint head golf coach Mike Deprez said. “It’s been a good nine months since they played on greens this fast. It was a combination of a tight golf course and everyone being a bit claustrophobic.”

The young Sandpoint team also showed some fatigue, according to Deprez.

“Making the trip down here playing two rounds of golf and a couple practice rounds will take a toll on anyone,” He said. “It’s hard not to get a bit fatigued or run out of gas for girls who are this young.”

Alexa Tuinstra paced the Bulldogs with a two-day total of 188.

“(Alexa) Tuinstra hit the ball great both days,” Deprez said. “She just had a couple of bad bounces today.”

Tuinstra finished day one of the tournament with a score of 90. She added eight strokes in round two, scoring 98.

Taylor Mire finished two strokes behind Tuinstra with a score of 190. She took six strokes off her score in the second round.

“She really only had one bad hole,” Deprez said. “Other than that, she had a good day.”

Joey Aexel, the lone boys’ competitor for the Bulldogs, finished 43 overall with a two-day total of 190.

“He had some stunning shots; he just has to work on recovery,” Deprez said. “He has all the shots; he just needs more tournament experience.”
