BOISE — The Sandpoint track team ended day one of the Class 4A Idaho state track meet on Friday at Dona Larsen Park with six state placers.

“I thought top to bottom they performed extremely well,” Sandpoint track coach Matt Brass said. “I was really happy with the excitement and competitiveness that they displayed."

Erika Edmundson led the day with a second place finish in the pole vault event. The junior cleared 10 feet.

"She got third last year and second this year," Brass said. She put in a lot of work during the summer to become a better athlete. It's awesome to see her hard work pay off.”

Devin McDaniel also notched medalist honors in the pole vault event with a fifth place finish, clearing nine feet and six inches.

The throwers of Sandpoint had a great day with Will Hurst and Ivy Smith both earning a spot on the podium.

Hurst finished sixth in the shot put with a toss of 49 feet and 10 inches.

"He's not happy about a sixth place finish," Brass said. “I'm proud of him for medaling but he's really exciting for the disc tomorrow. He's going to go all out.”

Smith, a sophomore, finished in fourth place during the shot put event. She threw 36 feet.

"She's come a long way not only physically bent mentally," Brass said. "She's learning to control her emotions and I'm excited to see how she'll look in her junior and senior years."

Megan Oulman rounded up Sandpoint's day one state placers by placing sixth in the 3200 meter race with a time of 11:41.60.

This was the seniors first time placing at the state tournament.

"She set a personal record and she's been an amazing runner for us for years," Brass said. "She ran strong, mature, and bold."

During the prelims, Rusty Lee once again broke his own school record in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Lee finished the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.47.

Lee ended up in second place; he finished behind Emmett’s Landon Helms, who broke the overall meet record with a time of 13.67.

Lee notched a first place finish in the 300 meter hurdles during the prelims with a time of 39.050.

"He's always relaxed and focused," Brass said. "He really likes a challenge he's fearless."

The Bulldogs will resume the Class 4A Idaho state track meet today at Dona Larsen Park.
