Newport Hospital and Health Services welcomed Merry-Ann Keane as chief executive officer this fall.

Keane replaces Tom Wilbur, who served as the hospital district's CEO since 2004.

A 31-year registered nurse, Keane holds a Masters of Science in nursing, Bachelor of Science in nursing, registered nurse certification, Nurse Executive board certification, perinatal and neonatal nursing specialty certifications, and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Prior to arriving in Newport, Keane held the dual role of CEO and chief nursing officer at Banner Health's Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, Wyo.

Keane said she had been looking for opportunities to return to Washington.

Keane brings with her a solid foundation of servant leadership and has taught at the university level.

"I have a true passion for rural healthcare," Keane said.

Keane retains all of her nursing credentials and has stepped in to help whenever needed. She is working to understand the community's needs and to get involved with local organizations.

Keane and her husband of 32-years, Liam, live in Newport and are anxious to enjoy the area's recreational activities and adventures.

The Keanes travel to their cottage in Ireland frequently and quarantined there for several months during the early part of the COVID pandemic.

"I baked, gardened, knitted and sewed … and then I knew I had to get back to work," Keane said.

The couple have two grown children who reside out of the area. In addition to her travel adventures, Keane enjoys walking, cooking, baking and canning.

Newport Hospital and Health Services is owned and operated by Pend Oreille County Public Hospital District and was originally established in 1921. Located in Newport, the district serves Pend Oreille County in Washington and western Bonner County in Idaho.
