Sandpoint wrestling success on senior night

The Bulldogs wrestling team hosted the Lake City Timberwolves in a very tight match on Tuesday night. Sandpoint seniors Gavyn Billington, Christian Troumbley, Calvin Hinds were celebrated.

Billington wrestled Zachary Macdonald in the 120 weight class. Billington was down at the end of the first period and lost to a pin by Macdonald in the second.

"Gavyn is brand new and he's really starting to figure things out," head coach Doug Fry said.

The Bulldogs Ashlei Hawkins took on Brycen Duboise at 126. Hawkins was ahead at the end of the first period, remained in the lead 8-3 at the end of the second, and won by major technical.

Shane Sherrill matched up against Alden Curto at 138. At the end of the first Sherrill was up 9-2. Sheririll had a two-point take down closely followed by a pin to win the match. Sherrill continues his undefeated streak for the year.

"It was really good to have Shane back," Fry said. "The team got a spark from having him again."

Bulldog captain and senior Christian Troumbley had a close match against Caden Dutra at 145. The two were tied 0-0 at the end of the first period and 1-0 at end of second. In the final seconds Troumbley had a go for the win but the Timberwolves Dutra snatched it by minor technical.

"He almost had it," Fry said. "He really wanted a win on his senior night."

Dakota Reif had an exciting match against Wyatt Matthews at 160. Reif was down in the first period then came back to win it with a reversal and pin.

"Dakota's a nice a surprise," Fry said. "He just figures it out and has been wresting really well. He's only a sophomore and I'm really excited for him."

Senior Bulldog Calvin Hinds went up against Garrett Leonard at 182. It was very evenly matched from the get-go. Leonard was up 4-11 after two periods and took the win by minor technical.

"Calvin had a really tough match," Fry said.

Next up for Sandpoint is the district meet on Friday, Feb. 17.
