Course offers help on difficult emotions

| June 9, 2023 1:00 AM

Geshe Dadul Namgyal, a new resident teacher at Sravasti Abbey, is offering a day-long workshop later this month.

Entitled “Working with Afflictive Minds: the First Steps,” the workshop will be held Saturday, June 17, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Buddhist monastery near Newport. Lunch is provided, and the course is offered on a donation basis. All are welcomed, and registration is required. Details are in the Events section at SravastiAbbey.org.

Buddhist psychology gives detailed, non-sectarian instructions on how to work with afflicted mental states such as anger, craving, and jealousy—noting how they harm us and how to work to tame and eventually overcome them. The course will include teachings, discussion, and guided meditation. Geshe Dadul will continue teaching on this topic in two-weekend workshops, one each in July and August 2023.

A Buddhist monk and scholar for over 40 years, Geshe Dadul holds the prestigious Geshe Lharampa Degree (equivalent to a Ph.D.) from Drepung Loseling Monastic University and a Master’s degree in English Literature from Panjab University, both in India. He recently retired as the Senior Translator/Interpreter with the Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-based Ethics at Emory University in Atlanta and is now a full-time resident at Sravasti Abbey.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Sravasti Abbey is a Buddhist monastery in the Tibetan Tradition. All programs are in English and the Abbey offers meditation courses and retreats, has an extensive YouTube channel, and supports its founder, Venerable Thubten Chodron, to publish books on Buddhist philosophy that are read worldwide.
