SANDPOINT — Sandpoint girls club lacrosse defeated Mead 17-4 Thursday in the Bulldogs' home opener at War Memorial Field.

SHS started the game with four goals in the first three minutes and the Big Cats were never quite able to recover. Rowan Davis, who scored the first two goals, ended up with seven for the Bulldogs, a new personal record.

“My around-the-crease shot was working well for me tonight. It also helped that my teammates were setting me up with some great passes inside. I’m really looking forward to another season with this team,” Davis said.

Cassidy Aitken and Alexis Downs also helped propel Sandpoint, chipping in with four goals apiece. Another key contributor was Grace “Groundball” Gavin, whose many scoops put Sandpoint in great position to score.

Coach Nancy Dooley said she was impressed with the team’s overall performance at such an early point in the season.

“I am very happy with how our team played in their first game; we played as a unit with everyone contributing,” she said. “We still have lots of work to do but it’s a great start. We had some jitters in the lockerroom, so it’s nice to get the first game of the season behind us.”

The Bulldogs are playing with seven first-time lacrosse players. Dooley said they all played smart ball and she is looking forward to seeing them become great lacrosse players.

Sandpoint’s next match will be against Richland-Hanford today at 10 a.m. at War Memorial Field.
