SMS girls wrestling repeats as district champions

PRIEST RIVER — Six different Lady Bullpups won their weight classes and the Sandpoint Middle School girls wrestling team won the Jerry Lamb Memorial All-Class District 1 tournament held at Priest River High for the second straight year Thursday.

With 13 teams and a total of 100 girls competing, 25 more than last year's tournament, Addyson Hyder (110 pounds), Daphne Krenelka (123), Harley Buxton (137), Harper Overland (144), Oriana Lopez (151) and Shayne Pirlot (160) all won their respective weight class for Sandpoint, which captured the title by more than 100 points with 192.5 total.

Allison Esposito (104), Dannika Jensen (137) and Summer Healy (151) all finished second, Ireland Brooks (80), Delaney Peterson (86) and Parker Powell (110) third for the Lady Bullpups. For Priest River, which placed eighth with 44.5 points, Naia Lamb (116) won an individual title, Kiera Blaine (86) was second and Makayla Larson won two out of her four matches.

SMS head girls wrestling coach Vali Johansen said the team is grateful for Sandpoint's leadership in fostering the growth of girls-only wrestling, setting a strong example of commitment to the sport. Although Johansen said competing against teammates throughout the season isn’t always easy, her athletes handled it with resilience and a competitive spirit that was truly inspiring.

"This incredible eighth-grade group set their sights on repeating as district champions, and their hard work and dedication every day paid off," SMS head girls wrestling coach Vali Johansen said. "We couldn’t be more thrilled for their success and for the bright future of girls wrestling in Sandpoint. Nights like last night showcase that this sport is here to stay — not just in North Idaho, but across the state."
