SANDPOINT — In their last home duals of the season, the Sandpoint Middle School boys and girls wrestling teams both came away with big wins over Lakes Middle School on Tuesday before heading into the postseason.

The girls, hosting their first ever middle school varsity dual in school history, won by a 52-3 margin. SMS girls wrestling head coach Valerie Johansen said a dual like such has been a goal for years and when it finally became a reality, her girls understood the significance of the opportunity and rose to the occasion, wrestling with grit and determination.

This season, Sandpoint has an impressive roster of 30 girls, ten of which competed in the varsity dual while the rest participated in junior varsity matches. Allison Esposito (98), Addyson Hyder (110), Kendall Walson (116), Alieze Padilla (123), Daphne Krenelka (123), Harper Overland (130), Summer Healy (137) and Oriana Lopez (160) all won by pin for the Lady Bullpups.

"The growth of girls wrestling in this area continues to be inspiring at both the middle and high school levels," Johansen said. "We’re proud that Sandpoint is helping set the pace for this progress and thankful for the ongoing support that allows this sport to flourish. After a season of mostly wrestling amongst ourselves, it was exciting to compete against another program with strong numbers."

On the boys' side, led by pins from Tyson Symons (98), Lucas Porter (104), Maxx Watson (110), Reed Corey (116), Alex Gomez (123), Axel Jones (130), Dominic Ratigan (151), and Frank Wilson (160), the Bullpups picked up a 57-34 win.

The middle school boys dual Canfield on Dec. 3 and will then finish up the season Dec. 7 when they host the district tournament. The girls will compete next at their own district tournament, which is set to be held Dec. 5 at Priest River High.
