COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Roos helps pitch Bruins to win in collegiate debut

Colin Roos, Salt Lake CC Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Colin pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief in his collegiate debut, giving up just two hits, three walks and zero earned runs while striking out three batters in a 10-5 win over South Mountain Community College (Phoenix, Ariz.) on Saturday, Jan. 25. Salt Lake CC (3-1) returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 4 when they travel to New Mexico Junior College. After that game, they'll head to a tournament in Weatherford, Texas that spans from Feb. 6-8.

Forest Ambridge, Southern Virginia University Lacrosse

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Forest scored a crucial goal for the Knights in their season-opening 16-13 win over SCAD Savannah (Savannah, Ga.) this past Saturday, Feb. 1. With 2:14 remaining in the second quarter, Forest scored an unassisted goal and the Knights used that momentum to add on two more late first-half goals to take a 9-8 lead heading into halftime. Southern Virginia (1-0) hosts Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Jack Zimmerman, Lassen College Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Jack, in his first collegiate appearances, went a combined 2-for-4 with a single, a double, and an RBI in wins against Hartnell (15-4) and Monterey Peninsula (8-5, 12-3). He also drew two walks and was hit by pitch for Lassen College (4-0), which returns to action Thursday, Feb. 6 at American River.

Brandon Casey, University of Montana Football

A 2020 graduate of Sandpoint High, Brandon recently received All-Big Sky Academic honors for the fourth straight year. To be eligible for such an honor, student-athletes must hold at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least half of their team's competitions during the fall. 

Connor Alexander, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field

A 2022 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Connor finished 12th out of 30 runners in the mile with a time of 4 minutes and 27 seconds, just .12 seconds shy of his personal record, at the Inland Northwest Invitational hosted by Whitworth University this past Saturday, Feb. 1 at The Podium. The Warriors will return to action Feb. 7-8 at Eastern Oregon's Lew Thorne Invite.

Camille Ussher, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field

A 2022 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Camille continues to impress for the Lady Warriors. At the Inland Northwest Invitational, she placed eighth out of 32 runners in the mile with a new personal record time of 5 minutes and 11 seconds, beating out eight NCAA Division I runners in the process. Camille also competed in the 800-meter run, finishing 29th out of 36 with a time of 2 minutes and 29 seconds.

Savannah Rickter, Dickinson State University Wrestling

A 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Savannah, still competing up a weight class at 180 pounds, posted a record of 3-3 and finished sixth out of 18 wrestlers at the Grand View Open (Des Moines, Iowa) this past Saturday, Feb. 1. Her three wins all came by pin — she defeated Celia Jaeger of the University of Jamestown, Toyia Grifin of Upper Iowa and Hollie Hedgpeth of Missouri Valley College. The Lady Blue Hawks travel to Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Asha Abubakari, Fresno State Track & Field

A 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Asha finished 16th out of 30 competitors in the weight throw with a new personal best mark of 14.00 meters (45 feet, 11.25 inches) at the University of Washington Invite held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Dempsey Indoor athletic facility. Fresno State will compete next at the Riverfront Invitational & Multis meet set to be held Feb. 6-8 at The Podium in Spokane.
