A & W ADDS DINING ROOM AND FIREPLACE
If you’re on your way skiing or snowmobiling or just out for a good meal, the A & W Drive-In, two miles north of Sandpoint on U.S. 95, is a great place to eat. Owner Jim Macaulay bought the drive-in in July, and added a dining room and an ever-burning fireplace to attract winter business. He attributes his “tremendous” ski business to the fact that he and his wife Marie talk skiing. “We ski ourselves so usually know the ski conditions; we call Schweitzer if we don’t know,” said Macaulay. “We also have a lot of snowmobilers in on the weekends because we have room for them to park.”

Feb. 4, 1950 – NAZARENE CHURCH BURNS
The year’s first major fire left the Church of the Nazarene at the corner of Fourth and Church a total loss. Neighbors saw flames shooting through the roof of the large frame building at 8:45 a.m. Sunday. An explosion minutes later was heard blocks away and showered glass over a large area. It is thought the fire started from an overheated furnace.

BRINGS FIRE TO FIRE STATION
“If Mohammed won’t come to the mountain, bring the mountain to Mohammed” had a modern twist when Carl Hill, KSPT radio announcer, drove his 1936 Chevrolet to the fire station to have a fire put out. Seems Hill wanted to keep the car motor warm, so he wrapped it in sacks. The motor was warm, so warm in fact, that the sacks burst into flames. Hill’s drive to the fire station was reminiscent of a steam-propelled vehicle. The fire was quickly extinguished.
