Contra dancing set for Friday
SANDPOINT — Mix together live music, a lively caller and the sister of square dancing and what do you get?
Plenty of fun as contra dancing takes center stage at Sandpoint Community Hall on Friday.
Held at Sandpoint Community Hall, dancing will take place from 7-10 p.m. Friday, July 11. No partner is needed, and it is suggested that new dancers come early for a few introductory dances.
Contra dancing is a sister of square dancing and shares many figures, but the figures are danced in long lines, or occasionally big circles, instead of squares. Always set to live music, each dance is taught during a couple of “walk-throughs” and called with the music.
As well as contra dances, there is an occasional waltz or polka.
New dancers are welcome; participants are asked to try to be on time for the first dance. In Sandpoint, the first few dances of every evening are especially beginner friendly. Dancers often change dance partners between dances, and anyone may ask anyone to dance, so you don’t need to bring a dance partner.
Bring a water bottle (the kind you’ll take home); wear cool comfortable clothes and bring non-marking dance shoes to change into once inside.
