Preserving county's legacy is a wise investment

| June 5, 2025 1:00 AM

In response to Susan Glasoe’s letter, no one would argue that the county has the responsibility to spend taxpayer money wisely. Preserving our county’s rich legacy is also a wise thing to do. Kudos to the hard-working staff and volunteers at the Bonner County Historical Society for their efforts to this end.

Recognizing the importance of preserving Idaho history, in 1969, the Idaho Legislature codified Statute 31-864. The law reads “The board of county commissioners of any county may expend annually such amounts as necessary for the support of local historical societies which are incorporated as Idaho nonprofit corporations.”

Our local historical society, BCHS, is the repository of historical knowledge and artifacts for our county. The organization operates through fundraising, grants, member dues and Bonner County support. Let’s hope our current commissioners recognize the importance of preserving and sharing our history and continue with the critical financial support.
