Science, climate change and a time for action

| June 10, 2025 1:00 AM

“We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt.” (Quoted from “The 2024 state of the climate report: Perilous times on planet Earth.”) When the U.N. appropriately calls for corrective action, Monte Heil (Daily Bee, May 22, 2025) accuses it of promoting a “socialist conspiracy.” No, Mr. Heil, it's not a conspiracy. It's a reasonable response to a growing, evidence-based, well-documented problem caused by rising global temperatures.

Mr. Heil incorrectly stated Earthjustice accepts funding from government agencies. It doesn't. (Earthjustice-Wikipedia). He appears to be confusing clients with donors. He also gave the false impression that the World Wild Life Fund receives a substantial portion of its funding from government grants. In 2024, these grants accounted for only 14% of its funding. (“Funding and Financial Overview-WWF”)

Fred Singer, who died in 2020, opposed the consensus of virtually all climate scientists that anthropogenic warming is a reality. If Mr. Heil wants to put his trust in someone who was funded by the fossil fuel industry and was in denial of the findings of mainstream science, so be it. But why rely on a discredited corporate shill who was paid to repress the conclusive evidence for anthropogenic warming? (“Fred Singer, All- Purpose Science Denier”)

2024 was the hottest year on record and climate disasters are becoming more costly, frequent, and intense. (“Off-the-Chart Heat: 2024 Global and U.S. Temperature Review”) The longer humanity fails to take decisive action, the more dire the situation will become.
