God knows our future: Lessons from the woman at the well

In John 4, we encounter a Samaritan woman drawing water at a well, an ordinary task on an ordinary day.

Yet, this moment becomes a divine appointment that reveals a profound truth: God knows our past, our present, and our future. For Christians from all walks of life, the story of the woman at the well is a powerful reminder that God sees us fully and calls us purposefully.

Jesus meets the woman in the heat of the day, a time when most avoided the well. She was likely trying to avoid the judgmental stares of others due to her complicated past. But Jesus, knowing everything about her, her five previous husbands and current situation, does not condemn her. Instead, He engages her in conversation, offering her “living water” that will quench her deepest thirst.

This encounter shows us that God is not surprised by our story. He knows where we’ve been, what we’ve done, and what we’re struggling with. Yet, He meets us right where we are, not to shame us, but to invite us into something greater. Jesus didn’t just see the woman’s past; He saw her potential. He knew her future. After their conversation, she became one of the first evangelists, running back to her village to tell others about the Messiah.

For believers navigating questions about calling, direction, or purpose, this story is deeply encouraging. It reminds us that God’s knowledge of us is complete. He doesn’t wait for us to have it all together before He calls us. In fact, He often uses the most unexpected people to carry out His mission. The woman at the well wasn’t a religious leader or a person of influence, she was an outcast. Yet, she became a vessel of transformation for her community.

God’s calling is not limited by our past or our present circumstances. He sees the road ahead even when we cannot. Like the woman at the well, we may feel unseen or disqualified, but God sees us clearly and calls us anyway. His plans for us are rooted in His perfect knowledge and love.

As Christians from diverse backgrounds — whether you’re new to the faith, a lifelong believer, or somewhere in between — this story invites us to trust in God’s intimate knowledge of our lives. He knows the gifts He’s placed within us, the people we’re meant to impact, and the journey He’s leading us on.

So, when you feel uncertain about your future or unsure of your calling, remember the woman at the well. God knew her story, met her in her brokenness, and called her into purpose. He will do the same for you.
