Locals among top at Race the Wolf event

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint's Jonathan Klaucke, 39, finished second overall out of 66 runners with a time of 4 hours, 14 minutes, and 39 seconds to lead all area finishers at the Race the Wolf Marathon, a challenging annual mountain trail race held this past Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22, at Schweitzer.

Jed Stephenson, 41, of Sandpoint finished fifth (5:00:04) and won the 40-49 male age division. Also cracking the top 20 from Sandpoint were Evan Rains, 32, who finished 14th (5:29.24), Justin Schuck, 45, who finished 15th (5:30:30), Jason Luthy, 42, who finished 17th (5:38:18), and Matt Peak, 43, who finished 18th (5:41:07).

In the half marathon race, Luke Finlayson, 20, of Cocolalla won the event, beating out 183 other competitors with a time of 1 hour, 57 minutes, and 12 seconds. The only other competitor to break two hours was Sandpoint's Jeremy Wildgoose, who finished second overall in 1:59:12. Josh Burt, 46, of Sandpoint won the 40-49 male age division and was eighth overall (2:08.51).

On the women's side, Ryanne Lemon, 44, of Sagle was the top overall female and 11th overall (2:14:25) while Sandpoint's Amanda Balera, 33, was the second overall female and 20th overall (2:24:15) and Sofia Rohrbach, 27, was the third overall female and 21st overall (2:24:43).

A number of current and past Sandpoint High cross country runners were among the half marathon's top 20. Rising junior Jack Lovin won the 19-and-under male age division and finished sixth overall in 2:06.19. Rising sophomore Kai Budensiek was seventh (2:06:19), 2025 graduate Fletcher Barrett was ninth (2:12:27), rising sophomore Hobbes Conley was 12th (2:14:38), rising junior Trace Evans was 13th (2:14.53), rising sophomore Wyatt Lemon was 14th (2:18:04), and 2024 graduate and current Stanford University attendee Keane Haesle was 15th (2:19:57).

In the five-mile race, 2018 Sandpoint High graduate William Dorman, 25, a former swimmer and track & field athlete, took home the gold medal in 36 minutes, 56 seconds, a time that beat out 195 other competitors. Cy Marshall, 14, a rising freshman at Sandpoint High who competes for the North Idaho Lakers legion baseball team, was third overall in 38:18.

Eston Harris, 17, a rising junior at the House of the Lord Christian Academy in Priest River, won the 19-and-under male age division and was sixth overall (39:57). Sandpoint High rising senior Evan Brubaker was eighth (40:13), rising eighth grader Kai Sinatra was 11th (43:09), rising freshman Sophie Brubaker was 15th and the second overall female (45:09), and rising eighth grader Halo Ripp was 16th and third overall female (45:27).

Rounding out the top 20 finishers from the area were Kyle McAvoy, 33, of Sandpoint, who was 18th (46:09) and Elliot Fite, 21, of Sandpoint, who was 20th (46:51). Sandpoint High 2024 graduate and former football standout Eli Allshouse was 21st (46:54), Priest River High rising senior Gage Ehrmantrout was 22nd (47:27), and Sandpoint High rising sophomore swimmer, cross country and track & field athlete Eli Norling was 23rd (47:44).
