Sandpoint Sharks successful at Summer Solstice meet
SPOKANE — Fifteen Sandpoint Sharks garnered podium placements, personal records and new race experiences at the Spokane Waves Aquatics Team Summer Solstice long course meet held this past Friday, June 20 through Sunday, June 22 at Mission Park's Whitter Aquatic Center.
“We got best times from everyone again to celebrate the first days of summer," head coach Emily Renzini said. "Through rain, wind and sun, and long days, the kids got up there and raced their hardest. They genuinely swam some of the best races I’ve seen."
Alivia Storms, 14, and Athena de Leeuw, 14, both swam the long course 1500-meter freestyle and 200-meter butterfly for the first time.
“I really want to highlight how proud I am of both Alivia and Athena for their harder races," Renzini said. "These are challenging on the mind as well as physical, so to have raced them for the first time and know that they can do these hard feats, it’s a big deal."
Campbell Wyman, 23, a Special Olympics champion and DSISO World Championship qualifier, had an excellent meet. His hard work continues to pay off as he set new personal bests in a handful of the 10 events he competed in.
Leo Montecchi, 13, Alex Fry, 13, and Addy Cornett, 12, all swam to excellent times in their first swim meet while Brylee Garvin, 13, swam the 1500-meter freestyle for the first time ever, finishing in a 27:24.35.
Kate Bracht, 8, had another great meet, tallying six gold medals, one silver and one bronze across 12 total events. She swam to a plethora of new personal best times, most notably in the 100-meter backstroke where she posted a time of 1:42.11, 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Charley-Rain Olpin, 11, and Vienne LaFountain, 12, each swam in many challenging events, including the 800- and 400-meter freestyles. In the 800 free, Olpin swam to a time of 11:16.49 and LaFountain to a time of 13:22.48, both new personal bests.
“All in all, this was a great meet," Renzini said. "I look forward to it every summer. It was a little different with the weather this year being all over the place, but spirits were high and many feats were had."
