COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Zimmerman continues to swing hot bat for Cougars

Jack Zimmerman, Lassen College Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Jack went a combined 2-for-5 with a single, an RBI double, two walks and a run scored during a three-game series against Shasta, a series in which Lassen won two out of three, this past Friday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, Mar. 1. Across 16 games played this season, the lefty now boasts a .240 batting average and a .375 on-base percentage to go along with four RBIs, five walks and three runs scored. The Cougars (11-6-1) will play Butte for a three-game series starting Friday, Mar. 7, and ending Saturday, Mar. 8.

Evan Williams, Tabor College Baseball

A 2021 graduate of Sandpoint High, Evan got the start on the mound in the series-finale against York University (York, Neb.) this past Sunday, Mar. 2, and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up six hits, five earned runs and a walk while striking out a career-high 13 batters in the 5-3 road loss. The Blue Jays (9-7) will host Bethany College (Lindsborg, Kan.) for a three-game series starting Friday, Mar. 7, and ending Saturday, Mar. 8.

Jantzen Lucas, Lewis-Clark State College Baseball

A 2020 graduate of Priest River High, Jantzen was credited with the win on the bump in the Warriors' 2-1 road victory over No. 24-ranked British Columbia this past Saturday, Mar. 1. The southpaw pitched three innings in relief, giving up three hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out three batters. Lewis-Clark State (6-7) hosts Eastern Oregon for a four-game series starting Saturday, Mar. 8, and ending Sunday, Mar. 9.

Forest Ambridge, South Virginia University Lacrosse

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Forest had a goal, a groundball, caused two turnovers and won one faceoff in a 10-7 home win over SUNY Delhi (Delhi, N.Y.) this past Saturday, Mar. 1. He also managed six shots, four of which were on goal, for the Knights, which trailed 6-5 at halftime. On the season, the midfielder now has three goals, 14 shots, 10 of which were on goal, an assist, five groundballs and four caused turnovers for Southern Virginia (3-3), which travels to Rhodes College (Memphis, Tenn.) on Saturday, Mar. 8.

Camille Ussher, Lewis-Clark State College Track & Field

A 2022 graduate on Bonners Ferry High, Camille placed 17th out of 20 in the preliminary round of the mile with a time of 5 minutes and 14 seconds at the NAIA Indoor National Championships held this past Thursday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, Mar. 1, at the Alachua County Events Center in Gainesville, Fla. She also competed on the Lady Warriors' distance medley relay that placed 11th out of 20 teams with a time of 12:16.31. Lewis-Clark State will start the outdoor season Tuesday, Mar. 11, at the Sam Adams Classic hosted by Whitworth University.

Helena White, Napa Valley College Basketball

A 2024 graduate of Priest River High, Helena had two points (1-2 FG), five rebounds and a steal in the Storm's season-ending 76-66 loss to Chabot at Nor Cal Regionals this past Wednesday, Feb. 26. Over the course of her freshman year she appeared in 17 games, starting in one, and compiled 19 points, 66 rebounds, 32 of which were offensive, seven assists, 15 steals and three blocks for Napa Valley, which finished the season with an overall record of 17-12.

Teagun Holycross, University of Montana Track & Field

A 2020 graduate of Priest River High, Teagun tied his personal best of 6.85 seconds and finished 10th out of 23 in the preliminary round of the 60-meter dash at the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships held this past Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, Mar. 1, at Northern Arizona University. The Griz will host the Al Manual Invitational to start their outdoor season Friday, Mar. 28, and Saturday, Mar. 29.

Asha Abubakari, Fresno State University Track & Field

A 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Asha threw a new collegiate best of 12.63 meters (41 feet 5.25 inches) and finished 14th out of 16 in the shotput at the Mountain West Indoor Championships held this past Thursday, Feb. 27, through Saturday, Mar. 1, at the University of New Mexico. Fresno State will host the Bulldog Invite this Saturday, Mar. 8, to officially begin the outdoor season.

Savannah Rickter, Dickinson State Wrestling

A 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High, Savannah, after a pair of losses, picked up a win by pin in 1 minutes and 11 second over Central Methodist's Shainne Whited to place seventh in the 180-pound weight class at the Heart of America Conference Championships held this past Saturday, Mar. 1, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The Lady Blue Hawks, which placed fifth at the conference meet, will compete next at the 3rd annual NAIA Women's National Championships, which will be held Friday, Mar. 14, and Saturday, Mar. 15, in Wichita, Kan.

Jacob Ballard, BYU Swimming & Diving

A 2020 graduate of Central Valley High (Spokane) who swam for a number of years at Sandpoint High and for the Sandpoint Sharks, Jacob helped the Cougars to a fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Swim & Dive Championships held Tuesday, Feb. 25, through Saturday, Mar. 1, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. In the preliminary round of the 100 fly, he swam to a new personal best time of 47.15 seconds, the eight-fastest in school history, and ultimately finished 15th out of 38 with a finals time of 47.41. He also placed ninth out of 32 in the 200 fly with a new personal best time of 1:44.64, the second-fastest time in school history, and placed 13th out of 41 in the 200 IM with a new personal best time of 1:46.95, which ranks as the 11th-fastest in school history. The BYU swim team will compete next at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship in Ocala, Fla., from Thursday, Mar. 13, through Saturday, Mar. 15.
