COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Dillon pitches another gem for Yaks

Austin Dillon, Yakima Valley College Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Austin threw seven innings, giving up just five hits, no earned runs and one walk while striking out three batters in a 5-1 road win over Pierce College this past Saturday, March 22. The hard-throwing righty has now struck out 25 batters across 26.2 innings this season and holds a 5.40 ERA and a 2-2 win-loss record. Yakima Valley (9-11) will face Walla Walla for a home doubleheader today and then travel to Walla Walla for a doubleheader Saturday, March 29.

Jantzen Lucas, Lewis-Clark State College Baseball

A 2020 graduate of Priest River High, Jantzen pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two earned runs and four walks while fanning a career-high seven batters in a 22-4 road win over Eastern Oregon this past Monday, March 24. Across 27.2 innings this season, the southpaw has struck out 21 batters and holds a 3.25 ERA and a 4-1 win-loss record. Lewis-Clark State (17-8) will host Oregon Tech for a four-game series starting Saturday, March 29, and ending Sunday, March 30.

Forest Ambridge, Southern Virginia University Lacrosse

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Forest netted a goal, dished out a career-high three assists and won two faceoffs in a recent 18-11 USA South Conference win over Huntingdon this past Saturday, March 22. On the season, the midfielder has accumulated five goals, four assists, 10 groundballs, four caused turnovers and has won 12 faceoffs across nine games played. Southern Virginia (4-6) will travel to Greensboro for a conference matchup today.

Jacob Ballard, BYU Swimming and Diving

A 2020 graduate of Central Valley High (Spokane) who swam for a handful of years for Sandpoint High and the Sandpoint Sharks, Jacob competed in a number of events at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship held this past Thursday, March 13, through Saturday, March 15, the Aquatics Swimming & Training Center in Ocala, Fla. Most notably, he led off the 200-yard free relay (1:20.44), splitting a 20.59 to help the Cougars to a seventh-place finish out of 27 teams; helped the 400-yard medley relay (3:13.24) to an eighth-place finish out of 30 teams after a 47.10 split in the 100 fly; was 16th out of 50 in the 100 breast (55.27), 15th out of 50 in the 100 fly (47.89) and 19th out of 34 in the 200 fly (1:48.97).

Sawyer Treadaway, Montana State University Lacrosse

A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Sawyer scooped up a season-high three groundballs in his second game action of the year this past Saturday, March 15, in a 23-1 win over Southern Utah. The former all-state defenseman and the Bobcats (4-3), which compete in the Division II Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association's Rocky Mountain Conference, travel to Montana this Friday for a rivalry showdown.

Arie VanDenBerg, Chapman University Football

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Arie was recently named to the Dean's List for the 2024 fall semester. To achieve this distinction at Chapman University, students must maintain a grade point average between 3.6 and 3.799 in at least 12 credits of residence course work taken for a letter grade during the semester.

Karlie Banks, Utah State University Basketball

A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Karlie announced Tuesday that she has entered the transfer portal. During her freshman year for the Aggies, she started in two games, appearing in 13 total, and averaged 8.5 minutes per game. She totaled 12 points, 17 rebounds, three assists and four steals for Utah State, which finished the season 4-27.
