Marjory Loraine Carlson, 91
With love and gratitude, we remember the remarkable life of Marjory L. Carlson, who passed away peacefully Feb. 15, 2025, at the age of 91.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher and friend. Marjory left an enduring legacy of kindness, adventure and devotion to those she held dear.
Born on Dec. 30, 1933, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Edward B. and Myrtle Hentershee, Marjory grew up with a love for learning and a spirit of determination. She attended Washington High School and went on to earn a degree in education from UCLA.
Marjory pursued a fulfilling career as a teacher, sharing her passion for health and physical education at North Torrance and Westchester high schools. She was more than a teacher — she was an advisor, coach and mentor, guiding countless students in athletics, club activities and life lessons. As the advisor for the Backpacking Club, she led adventures across the Sierra Nevada Mountains, including treks along the John Muir Trail and an unforgettable climb of Mount Whitney with her dear friend, Ruth.
In August 1956, Marjory married John E. Carlson, with whom she shared a loving partnership of over 60 years. Together, they raised three sons, John, Scott (Donna) and Steve (Misha). Marjory found immense joy in her family, which grew to include six grandchildren — Jace, Evan, Ryan, Haley, Kendal and Zack — and six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought light to her life.
In 1979, Marjory and John began a new chapter as the owners of Island View Resort in Hope, Idaho. They took great pleasure in hosting RV campers and creating cherished memories for their guests. After retiring, Marjory dedicated herself to her passions for travel and family. She explored Europe, Africa and Machu Picchu, Peru, with her closest friends, savoring the beauty and wonder of the world.
Marjory will be fondly remembered for her warmth, her love of family dinners and her legendary pies and cookies that made every gathering sweeter. Her adventurous spirit, unwavering kindness and dedication to family and friends were an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Myrtle Hentershee; her sister, Diane; and her husband, John. Marjory’s memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends and the countless lives she touched throughout her journey.
