PREP ROUNDUP: Priest River boys golf wins 3A District 1-2 title
GOLF
BLANCHARD — Priest River High senior Palmer Coleman defended his district title, carding a 2-over-par 73 with a score of 38 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine, and the host Spartans won the 3A District 1-2 team title on Friday at the Stoneridge Resort Golf Course.
Palmer, son of Priest River High head coach Jim Bob Coleman, finished with two straight birdies to win the individual title by seven strokes, and in the process, help the Spartans to the title.
"I knew he would keep his composure," coach Coleman said of Palmer. "He's got a knack for the big moment."
Sophomore Nate Fegert shot an 84 and finished tied for fourth while sophomore Braxton Knaack shot a 98 in the winning effort.
"He's been playing really well, nice to see it continue today," Coleman said of Fegert. "Braxton toughed it out. He was under the weather today. We really needed him to come in with something in the 90s and he did it. Love the grind and mental toughness there."
Junior Mason Crump recorded a 102, junior Parker Bradbury a 107 to help Priest River defeat both Kellogg and Genesis Prep by four strokes each.
"Two kids that haven't played golf before the season," Coleman said. "Their scores were just as important as the 73 to get the team to state."
Coach Coleman said the team's consistency throughout the year played a huge factor when it came to crunch time.
"We've been consistent with our numbers all year," Coleman said. "360-365 has been our target goal and we kept it under with the pressure of being in districts. They did an awesome job."
For Clark Fork, junior Payton Stevens registered a score of 110, sophomore Mateo Cruz a 120 in what was the Wampus Cats' first season back at the district tournament after a 1-year hiatus in 2024.
On the girls' side, two Lady Spartans punched their tickets to the 3A State Championship. Senior Paityn Yount tallied a 104, a 56 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine, and finished second overall while junior Aleigha Jensen carded a 118 and placed fifth. Sophomore Callie Stanger, golfing for just four weeks now, posted a score of 127, only five strokes away from qualifying for state.
The 3A State Championship is set to be held May 12 and 13 at the River’s Edge Golf Club in Burley.
