Ernest 'Ernie' Chester Belwood Jr., 77

| May 7, 2025 1:00 AM

On April 12, 2025, we sadly lost a pillar of our community when Ernest (Ernie) Chester Belwood Jr. passed away at his home in Laclede, Idaho, surrounded by his wife and kids.

Ernie was born to Chet and Nita Belwood on July 20, 1947, in Newport, Wash. He was a devoted husband, an incredible father, best friend, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, and lifelong community member.

Ernie is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Diane, son Butch (Jessi), daughter Lori, sister Patty (Chet), sister Betsy, grandchildren Erica, Nick, Tanner, Julia, Kobe, Halea and Hannah, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Nita, sister Micky, and granddaughter Taija.

After graduating high school in Priest River, Ernie began working for the railroad before he was drafted into the Army and served our country for two-and-a-half years. He bravely served active duty in Vietnam for one year and eight months. Ernie was honorably discharged and returned home on his 21st birthday in 1968. Upon his homecoming, he married his high school sweetheart, Diane, and they started their family.

After a brief return to the railroad, he was given the opportunity to work at and later own, Belwood’s Furniture, which served our community for over 30 years. Ernie eventually retired to his family property in Laclede where he enjoyed being outside working on the property and on his tractor most of the time.

2009 brought a devastating cancer diagnosis, but Ernie was not giving up without a fight and continued to give us 16 more years. He absolutely loved life and all it had to offer while he continued receiving treatment and living life to its fullest. Ernie was grateful for every day and continued bringing light, love, and laughter to everyone who was blessed enough to cross his path.

He was notably loved by all that knew him, had the best sense of humor and uncanny ability for keeping all who were around him entertained. Ernie was the greatest storyteller, and his unwavering positive attitude in all circumstances will be missed greatly, he was loved and loved deeply.

Ernie’s celebration of life will be held at the Sandpoint Elks Golf Course on May 17, at 1 p.m.

All his friends and fans are welcome.
