PREP ROUNDUP: Storms, Gomez clinch two state bids

* Editor's Note: A sentence ran in yesterday's paper about a potential state wildcard bid for Sandpoint's 4x200 relay team. Upon further review, the state's 5A and 2A classifications are the only ones that don't receive wildcard bids for relays. So, despite the team owning the No.3 best time in the state, they cannot qualify for the state championship according to the Idaho High School Activities Association.

TRACK & FIELD

LEWISTON — Sandpoint High sophomore Elizabeth Storms won the 800-meter run and placed second in the 1600-meter run, junior Maverick Gomez won the 100-meter run and placed second in the 200-meter run as the Bulldogs wrapped things up at the 5A District 1-2 Championship held Friday at Lewiston High's P1FCU Sports Complex.

Storms' time of 2:26.91 in the 800 was a new personal best as was her 1600 time of 5:22.79, which ranks as No. 10 in school history.

Gomez's winning 100 time of 11.14 in the 100 was just thousands of a second ahead Moscow's Caleb Heywood. He then followed that up with a time of 22.12 in the 200, which ranks as No. 3 all-time in school history.

Gomez, Van Lee, Kamren Ziarnick and Isaac Schmit broke the school record in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.49 seconds to take second. Despite them having the No. 2 time in the state's 5A classification as of Friday night, they will miss out on state due to the Idaho High School Activities Association's representation guidelines.

Also on the girls side, senior Noah Roark clinched her second state bid, placing second in the 400-meter dash with a new personal best time of 1:01.79.

Junior Jetta Thaete rounded out the day by remaining undefeated in the javelin, winning the district title in it's first year of being an officially sanctioned event with a toss of 130 feet, 10 inches.
