COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: David shines at Frontier Conference Championships
Alex David, Rocky Mountain College Track & Field
A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Alex threw a new collegiate personal best of 109 feet, 1 inch in the discus to finish sixth out of 18 competitors at the Frontier Conference Championships held this past Sunday, May 4, through Monday, May 5, at Carroll College's Vigilante Stadium. Her mark was the third highest amongst freshman in the conference. The Battlin' Bears will compete next at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Marion, Ind.
Austin Dillon, Yakima Valley College Baseball
A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Austin capped off the regular season by pitching four innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out five batters in 3-0 loss to Spokane CC, which clinched the NWAC East Region Championship, this past Saturday, May 10. The hard-throwing righty currently holds a 5-4 win-loss record on the season and a 4.46 ERA across 70 innings to go along 70 strikeouts, which ranks as 10th in the entire NWAC. Yakima Valley (24-24) clinched the final East Region playoff spot and will face Clark College (Vancouver, Wash.) and Umpqua CC (Roseburg, Ore.) this upcoming Friday before a doubleheader Saturday, also against Umpqua, at NWAC Super Regionals.
Brandon Casey, University of Montana Football
A 2020 graduate of Sandpoint High, Brandon recently received an invite and competed at the Denver Broncos' rookie minicamp, held this past Friday, May 9, through Sunday, May 11, in Englewood, Colo. The star offensive tackle, who started 44 games for the Grizzlies, also competed at the Seattle Seahawks' rookie minicamp held at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center from Thursday, May 1, throughout Saturday, May 3.
Evan Williams, Tabor College Baseball
A 2021 graduate of Sandpoint High, Evan was recently named to the Kanas Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for his efforts on the mound this season. The former Sandpoint High star posted a team-low 4.83 ERA and struck out a conference-best 113 batters across 82 total innings. He threw five complete games during his senior season and held a 9-4 win-loss record across 16 appearances, including 14 starts. He holds the Tabor College record for most strikeouts in a game (18), an effort he was named the NAIA Ball Pitcher of the Week for. His 113 strikeouts ranks as third in school history while his nine wins ranks as tied for 11th in school history.
Shane Sherrill, Doane University Wrestling
A 2024 graduate of Sandpoint High, Shane recently received the team's Most Improved Wrestler Award for the 2024-2025 season. The former 4A (now 5A) state medalist went 8-3 across two tournaments during his freshman campaign for the Tigers, which won the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship and placed fourth at the NAIA National Championships.
