7B Care Clinic urges caution regarding Plan B availability

SANDPOINT — 7B Care Clinic, Bonner County's only no-cost women's health provider, is raising awareness about potential unrestricted distribution of Plan B (levonorgestrel), the "morning-after" pill, in public bathrooms across Sandpoint.

Plan B works primarily by delaying or preventing ovulation, but it may also alter the uterine lining, potentially affecting implantation of a fertilized egg. This raises ethical concerns for those who believe life begins at conception, and clinic officials said the drug has significant effects on pregnancy, ovulation, and the menstrual cycle that deserve careful consideration.

"Our mission is to empower women with truth and comprehensive care, ensuring informed choices that prioritize their health, well-being and dignity," said clinic director Janine Shepard.

Due to potential side effects and the potential for unmonitored and repeat use, clinic officials expressed concern about potential public bathroom dispensers, which offer no medical guidance or follow-up care.

Of significant concern is the accessibility of Plan B to underage individuals, whose bodies and reproductive systems are still developing, may use the pill without medical supervision or parental guidance.

Without professional support, clinic officials said they may face physical and emotional challenges, compounded by a lack of access to follow-up care.

"Women deserve to be treated with respect and care, not offered a one-size-fits-all solution in an environment that lacks privacy, support, or education," Shepard said. "True empowerment comes from providing women with the resources and guidance to make informed choices in a setting that honors their inherent worth."

As the only no-cost provider in Bonner County, 7B Care Clinic is uniquely positioned to support women with accurate information and compassionate care, Shepard said.

"We offer free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and counseling to help women navigate their reproductive health decisions," Shepard said.

Clinic officials urged residents to seek professional guidance before using Plan B.
