May 29, 1975 – PIETSCH IS TOP TEACHER
Carol Pietsch, Sandpoint High School home economics instructor, has been named the top home economics teacher in Idaho. Mrs. Pietsch, who has taught in Sandpoint for 10 years, was nominated by her principal, Richard Sodorff. Besides coordinating the home economics curriculum for school district No. 82, she has supervised 16 student teachers during her tenure at SHS. Sodorff pointed out that after Mrs. Pietsch reorganized the SHS home economics department, the program grew 125 percent in three years.

SAVE YOURSELF WITH AN ICE PICK?
“I wish school were always like this,” mused one little girl while painting a rock during Hobby Day at Farmin School. Students in grades 3-6 chose six demonstrations from 30 crafts, sports, and hobbies offered. Julie Bloxom liked the backpacking presentation best. “You learned how to save yourself with an ice pick,” she explained, “and how heavy a tent is and what boots to wear.” Janet Dexter liked karate best. “You learn how to fight,” she said, “how to defend yourself.” Crayon art was Brian Czarapata’s favorite. “They taught you how to do it at home,” he said. “It’s easy.” Kevin Dixon also liked crayon art and said, “It was the funnest thing I did all day.” Ping-pong was several students’ best class. “It was just fun,” summed up Brandon Faulk. This was Farmin’s first Hobby Day, although some other schools in the district have offered them.

May 29, 1950 – LADDER SAVED SCHOOL
The city fire department’s purchase three years ago of a 45-foot extension ladder was justified Tuesday, when the fire laddies made a run to the Farmin school and needed every foot of the long ladder to reach the roof of the high old building. A patch of dry shingles had been ignited by chimney sparks, but quick work prevented a serious fire.
