Barrows-Young set to deliver art lectures
If you’re curious about art — how it affects emotions, how it’s a window into its creator, how it has changed over history — you will want to mark your calendars for this series of six lectures offered by Alison Barrows-Young at Pend Oreille Arts Council’s Joyce Dillon Studio. These 90-minute sessions will cover a diverse range of topics and are held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday evenings starting June 6.
Although it isn’t necessary to sign up for all six lectures, you can pick and choose, you most likely won’t want to miss a single one of these informative, educational and entertaining sessions. You must register online, www.artinsandpoint.org/art-talk, and each lecture costs $18. All on Fridays, the dates are June 6 and 20, July 25, Aug. 8 and 22, and Sept. 12. Registration deadlines are three days prior.
With over 40 years of teaching experience, Barrows-Young brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the studio. Besides being a knowledgeable teacher, she’s also a brilliant artist in her own right. Barrows-Young holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Antioch College and a Master of Fine Arts from Florida State University. Additionally, she earned a Master of Education from Concordia University in Portland, Ore.
“All of us at POAC are excited to present these lectures this summer,” Jan Rust, coordinator of Joyce Dillon Studio and POAC board member, said. “These lectures won’t be typical. Alison Barrows-Young will dive into topics from art history and movements to culture civilization, and the identity of artists. Participants will explore the relevance of various art history movements and how they continue to shape our understanding of the world.
“Alison excels at breaking down the artistic thought process. She has a deep understanding of various visual art forms and techniques. Besides facilitating the lecture series, she is also teaching abstract painting and printmaking at the studio this summer,” Rust said.
POAC’s website has all the details about the adult art classes offered at the Joyce Dillon Studio. If you are interested in art, whether you’re a novice or well experienced, there are classes designed to appeal to you.
Besides the adult classes at Joyce Dillon Studio, POAC also hosts Kaleidoscope which provides hand-on art education to third to sixth graders attending Bonner County schools who don’t have an art teacher and Art for Life classes which are designed for seniors and are held at the Sandpoint Senior Center.
