Agents' actions pose dragnet concerns
On the last day of a U.S. federal marshal "dragnet" it was made public that, "G" men, in conjunction with SWAT teams across the country rounded up more than 10,000 fugitives of justice in just six short days. Getting that many offenders off the street is a good thing. However, does anyone else see the wide sweeping implications here?
Support your local law enforcement
I am responding to Lon LaBelle's letter to the editor on April 19, 2005, where he complained about his friend getting a citation for speeding. I'm not sure what you're complaining about. Is it the fact your friend was issued a citation for violating the law as you admitted he did or is because he wasn't given special treatment because he is a retired police officer. If your friend was speeding he deserves to get a citation just like the rest of us regardless of who he is or what he did for a living. The police officer who issued him the citation was just doing the job we, the taxpayers, pay him to do. The community should be pleased to see our law enforcement officers are not showing preferential treatment when they do the job they have been entrusted to do. If Mr. LaBelle feels the police are scaring away "patrons and visitors" by enforcing the laws, then maybe those type of visitors don't need to come here. Our local law enforcement officers are dedicated professionals who leave their families every day knowing they may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect your family and they deserve the support of the community they protect.

Why is the city putting caustic soda in water?
In reading the Clark Fork news in the Bee, the question again comes up why are we adding caustic soda to our drinking water? In fact, what is caustic soda? Look on a can of lye used to clean sink drains — caustic soda. What is the man ingredient in a gunsmith's tanks to clean gun barrels and parts before bluing? Caustic soda.

Tickets are out of control in the Sandpoint area
Is it true it's against the law in Sandpoint to sneeze? If your tow's desire (the growing community on the "big lake)" is policeman that are overdoing their duties to the point of being bullies than you, the residents, are getting your tax money's worth. If your goal is to scare away patrons and visitors, your efforts are proving to be successful. My friend and neighbor, a retired Cleveland, Ohio, policeman of 38 years recently received a ticket of $58 going out of town into a designated speed increase. He says towns that have too many policemen get bored and pick on residents and visitors. Too much fore is too much force. Everyone, even policemen, make small mistakes in their lives daily — innocent humans make small harmless mistakes. Will you prosecute and fine all of them?

Balance of power
This is in response to Steve Hatcher's letter of April 7, which suggested Harvey Pine voted for all Democratic candidates. War on drugs
In reply to Bob Wynhausen's letter of April 14th, I agree with Bob. The war on drugs has been a dismal failure. In the past 35 years, we have sinfully wasted over a billion dollars trying to save people from their own weaknesses and recklessness. And I agree that more should be spent on adoption education and funding. Why not cut some funding from the failing drug war and compensate functional adults financially to adopt? Adoption reform is where our churches and government have failed society.

Height restrictions aren't the full story
There have been a number of articles recently, addressing the proposed building height change — all of them have stated that the proposed height restriction will limit building height to 60 feet. This is not the full story.
Department won't end construction disputes
Realtors and builders are again making a push for a building department in Bonner County, apparently joined by R.J. Cohn, the Daily Bee's reporter. In recounting a Sagle couple's difficulties with their builder, Mr. Cohn declared that "other homeowners say they have experienced similar headaches since 1997 when county commissioners voted to eliminate the building department."
Schiavo tragedy showed politicians' true colors
Terri Schiavo is now resting in peace. We shouldn't forget how certain politicians exploited this family conflict. No doubt, some of the supporters of Schiavo's parents were moved by sincere concerns and principles. But the motives of many politicians and crusaders who rushed in can be called into question. Tom DeLay was seen playing God through this drama. Responding to the news report that DeLay and his family withheld life-sustaining care from his own father when he was in a coma, DeLay replied, "My father was on life support and dying. Schiavo is living and wants to live."

Are property owners' rights heard at planning hearings?
In February we went to a Planning and Zoning meeting in regard to an annexation and subdivision proposal. The applicant made his proposal by starting with the statement that the city has given it's OK for him to hook up to city water and sewer, whether they annexed property or not, and therefore the county told him he could put the proposed number of houses on approximately a 6-acre parcel since he would have city water and sewer.
