Idaho Club taking shape
Sales of residential homes and property may have cooled from the torrid pace which lit up the Bonner County real estate market a couple of years ago, but a new housing sector — the vacation or second home in planned community resorts — has suddenly taken off in the last year. Projects like The Crossing at Willow Bay, Dover Bay, The Seasons at Sandpoint and The Idaho Club are all reporting strong sales and reservations of homesites in developments that include marinas, fitness centers and a host of other amenities.

Bartelson tells story about area bars
I met the late Ernie Bartelson when I went with Erik Daarstad to film him for the Sandpoint Centennial Movie. Today, when I drive by the Tam O'Shanter, or Tervan, I think of Ernie and the story he shared with us. He, and his wife Opal, ran the little bar for many years and he remembered when you didn't have to take many steps to find a "watering hole" in Sandpoint. Here is his story in his own words.

Tips help keep bacteria out of our cooking
When we're in the supermarket deciding what to make for dinner, we don't think of making a nice dish of e coli with listerosis on the side, but if we don't handle and prepare our foods properly, that's just what we might be eating. In fact, often when we think we have a touch of the "stomach flu", what we really have is a case of food-born illness, otherwise known as food-poisoning.

Are unions needed to level playing field?
In response to the letter regarding Bonner County's low employment rate: Many manufacturing and corporate businesses relocate to Bonner County because they have been told it is an area that historically pays low wages to worker and nothing is done about it. Think of it as "domestic" outsourcing. In addition, Idaho is a state that loosely regulates the use of certain chemicals known to cause cancer in humans. One such chemical, becomes a carcinogen when inhaled in sufficient quantities and is routinely used in Idaho in aerospace and auto refinishing applications. Fewer manufacturing restrictions is another reason for businesses to relocate to Idaho.

Realtors and developers must drop housing prices
As a resident of Sandpoint, I want to voice my opinion about our local real estate market. First, I want to let local realtors and developers know, that by building and promoting high priced mansions in this area, you are hurting local economy and local families. Right now your high priced developments are not selling, are they? But, by keeping the home prices high, you're stopping local, hard working residents from buying a home of their own. My suggestion to developers and Realtors in this area is, stop being greedy and drop your real estate prices!

If we band together, we can change property tax system
As time for the payment of our property tax is approaching we are painfully reminded of the debacle involving our property assessments in Bonner County. Those that filed an appeal and received a reduction of their assessed value were dealt a blow when the Idaho State Tax Commission negated the county commissioners rollback of all the assessments to the previous years value. The State Tax Commission's mandated assessment generally resulted in a higher assessment than the one originally done by the Bonner County Assessor's Office. And to add to the pain, we were told that we had no recourse to appeal.

To whoever decorated the Community Center with all the colorful lights and all the rest of the trees on First and Fifth avenues, thank you so much.
