Fellow Idaho taxpayers, we have received this year's property tax assessments, this year with a higher than usual increase. I think it's time legislation is passed to protect the long-time Idaho property owner from these sky-rocketing property tax assessments.

Chemical treatment backed by science
Lake Pend Oreille is a beautiful lake, but not up close. Caroline Lobsinger got it right! The lake and river have some very sick areas. In the past four years the Eurasian milfoil has increased dramatically along the north shore of the river between the Long Bridge and Dover.

Assessor's office staff only following the law
I'd like to say a word in support of the Bonner County Assessor's office. I asked them where I could find comp sales for my property. Within two days, they sent me a list of nine properties — addresses, parcel numbers, selling price and sale date. It proved factually that the assessor is not arbitrarily assigning values to properties, but following the Idaho law of assessing at market value. I don't agree with the law, but now I certainly understand how my property was assessed and what data were used.

County's taxpayers need remedial government math
Although I freely admit to being less than a mathematical genius, I did recently dive to the wreckage of a few past years' tax payments, and feel something is amiss.
Property assessments make taxpayers wonder
The recent unrealistic increase in property evaluations is not a result of local or regional economic development, wage structure or other local area economic influences. It is a symptom of over development by those from places like Florida and Reno, etc. who have come here to build luxury housing, upscale condos and exclusive gated communities with the intent of luring well off people from afar, charge them exorbitant prices and skip off merrily leaving an artificial hyper-inflated evaluation bubble to the detriment of the local people with their average homes, which should be unaffected by this activity.

'Green' approach needed to eliminate county's milfoil
At a recent meeting of the Bonner County commissioners, approval was given for the expenditure of funds to begin the process of "eradication" of milfoil in various bodies of water around our county. To proceed with the application of hundreds of thousands of pounds of chemicals is in the same category as allowing the Rock Creek Mine to dump waste into the Clark Fork River, and thus into our lake. Community must join together to fight increases
Attention Bonner County property owners — we all need to band together and get our property assessment appeal forms in by June 26. We, as a community, need to send a strong message for more tax reform. Elected officials who are not in favor of tax relief for property owners need to be voted out. They govern local taxing districts and must get control of spending when budgets are set. Don't put the burden on property owners. People in our community will be taxed right out of their homes (especially long-term residents and low-income). Even homeowner's exemptions (which should have been $100,000 or more) don't help many people because of doubling and tripling of assessments.

While legal, increased assessments not right
I am absolutely amazed. I cannot believe that the letter I opened from the county assessor's office recently is "the way it is." I completely understand that it is legal but I am blown away that anyone — anyone — thinks this is fair. How can we, in this tiny town, this little county and small state, actually govern ourselves this way?

Voting, assessments and milfoil make strange politics
As a registered voter I found our last election to be an ongoing comedy when I voted. I was given two ballets, one Democratic and one Republican, with instructions that I could only vote on one ballet and the other unmarked ballet was to be put in a separate pile with the ballet I marked on being put into the ballet box. What if I wanted to vote for someone or something on the ballet I was not using? Too bad for me.

Property tax reduction starts with new officials
Have we forgotten the 48-percent ad valorem tax increase in 1992 and the major increase in property taxes in 1995?
