Focus on driving vehicle, not answering cell phone
I am writing in response to Kay Berry's recent letter concerning drivers on their cell phones. I, for one, was guilty as charged. This summer, I was waiting at a stop sign and my cell phone rang. I was not going to answer it, but picked it up just to see what the caller ID said. I entered the road and slammed into some poor unsuspecting person's car, shocking us both. I can't tell you how horrible I felt.
Byway decision is not a popularity contest
I've read with interest the recent flurry of pro-bypass letters to the editor. They all seem to share a common theme — that the selection of a route for the bypass is a popularity contest — it is not! The route selection is a regulatory compliance contest — little else matters. ITD wants you to believe it is a popularity contest ("the vast majority of Bonner County residents approve …") because that is the only way they can push through their desired route. In a nutshell, the regulations require that the route that does the least damage to the aquatic environment must be selected; a through town route trumps a highway in the creek every time.

Water leaks can cause big problems for homeowners
For several months, my company has responded to emergency flood cleanups that usually require removing water from either a basement or sunken living room. Generally, this situation happens because of a broken pipe releasing water into the living envelope or hydrostatic pressure forcing water through the cracks or pores of the concrete foundation.

Small town life slips away

Elgar story packed with rumor, but not the facts
I believe that the reporter, R.J. Cohn, and the publisher, David Keyes, have stooped to a very low form of journalism, by publishing an article, a few days before the election, that is entirely unfounded in fact. The article, based on nothing but a lone comment to the Bee, calls into question the integrity and honesty of a highly respected and very honest Democratic candidate: Steve Elgar. The article states "several comments on internet blogs question…"
Sand Creek needs a park, not a highway
In response to Lawrence Fury's recent letters to the editor — he seems to suggest "saving" Sand Creek from the wrath of condo development by building the byway. I've been clear with him that those backing the tunnel support a regional park and preserve for the east bank of the creek. The trail system remains a requirement for the re-aligned byway and can anchor the new park on the land currently owned by ITD. Building the trail on dry land will have a significant cost savings while the current plan for pathway fills in the creek and an extensive boardwalk structure. The park could tie into the city-owned waterfront property north of the water plant and the railroad station could finally get the respect it deserves as one of park's focal points.
Freedom with Responsibility
Bonner County cannot afford voter apathy. If national and state elections can be determined by razor-thin margins, then a few hundred or less votes can mean the difference as to whether one candidate or another gets in locally.

Now it's time for community to count our many blessings
Whew.
Put God back in education and check out the progress
Idahoans spend 64.9 percent of every tax dollar on education each year. Yet, we rank 45th in the country on per student spending. If a quality education depended on how much money you spend, our kids would be getting a great education. Are they? Yes, money is a requirement but it's more about what we teach and how we teach that ultimately makes the difference in the desire to learn and the quality of education received. This is fact. We have solid examples of this in other states (i.e. Wisconsin, Indiana, South Carolina) where they have de-emphasized state expenditures and introduced competition and alternatives to the public system.
Washed out roads reopen
SANDPOINT — Bonner County is returning to normal Wednesday, a day after rains soaked the region and caused several road washouts in the eastern part of the county.
Traffic plan's real goal is to eliminate byway
The Nov. 3 Daily Bee noted that Pierre Bordenave included the comment "I don't care how this happens or in what sequence, but we have to do something." In his presentation to a City Council workshop studying traffic flow issues in Sandpoint. His comments are close to the epitome of disingenuity. In the past few years he, along with Liz Sedler and the crew at NICAN, has fought at every turn the best single comprehensive solution for the traffic "… snarl of gridlock that has plagued the city for years …" After some five years as the current iteration of the bypass construction project has been fought, all we have are numerous stakes with multi-colored ribbons on them. There is little doubt that the "Field of Stakes" is the direct result of the endless delaying tactics mounted by NICAN as they fought every step of the process.
Big spender officials are taking everything away
Military duty over I got a good job, made 1.5 monthly mortgage payments for two years. Found a rich (no dicker) purchaser and sold house for $2,000 clear profit. What if byway supporters showed up at meeting?
Well, there it is folks, Ralph Sletager's development plan for the east bank of Sand Creek. An entire community for the have and have mores. The ulterior motive behind the anti-byway cartel as I've said all along. (Bee, Oct. 27) We'll be lucky if us natives can even use the beach.
Why are people dumping garbage along the bridge?
I have two questions:
Sorting through the aftermath of Bulldogs' loss
I've been on most sides of the story when it comes to Friday night football. I was a referee in the North Idaho Officials Association for three years. I coached for six years at Coeur d'Alene and Lakeside High Schools and even played many moons ago. And now I'm in my second year covering the games as a sportswriter. In short, it's a few different colored pair of glasses with which I viewed the controversial play in Sandpoint's 28-24 loss to Bishop Kelly on Friday night.
Changes would improve area's traffic congestion
While the long-term solution to Sandpoint's traffic problem may be in the distant future, there are measures which could be taken immediately at little cost to reduce the congestion in the downtown core.
There are no excuses for not voting

Disbanding the Bonner County Planning and Zoning (Bud Mueller's new target) is dangerous. The public suffers every time. Litigation increases, congestion worsens and green areas vanish. A better idea: Strong planning and zoning done with public engagement, respect and ethical conduct—Todd Crossett's way.

'None of the above' is the best choice
I am about to vote for the first time in over 20 years. I have heard candidates for state office saying they helped us with our roads. What about dangerous Highway 95 (on hold until 2012). I hear local candidates claim they are going to help solve the property tax problem. They offer no real solution except they will work with others (that's how our problem got started).
Anderson deserves our support, vote
To say that milfoil interferes with recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating, understates the problem. Among other things, even strong swimmers can become entangled and drown in milfoil infested waters. Washington state spends $1,000,000 per year in public and private funds to control milfoil.
Elgar understands our values, needs
Steve Elgar stands for the same values today as he did 26 years ago when we met Steve, and his family lived in an apartment over the Perch on the University of Idaho campus. His understanding for others and his strong family values were reaffirmed to us recently when he agreed to serve as a pallbearer at Madge's funeral.
