Get involved and attend meetings
What a pleasure reading Bob Gunter’s column last week in the Daily Bee where he wrote about some of our streets names and their significance. It is thought to be part of the “original” working class neighborhoods of Sandpoint.

Organizations need help, especially in tough times

Yet this is the most important time for them to stay the course.

Don't give in to Teamsters' threats to healthcare
As a registered nurse at BGH, I'm outraged at the Deutchmans' letters, which suggest if the community does not support the Teamsters, then they won't have access to a nurse at the hospital, which is not only untrue, but highly inappropriate. There are a large number of nurses who oppose the Teamsters, and as one, I am sick of the splatter, much of it twisted and untrue, from the Teamsters. All these ads you see about supporting your nurses - for those of you who don't know - they aren't ads by the nurses; they are run by the Teamsters, and all of the nurses do not support the Teamsters.

Property assessments were under fire two years ago with Mr. Clemons blaming Judi Conlan for not having enough assessors and being unable to keep up with the Realtors who were having a fire sale of Bonner County property.
Repeal is example of 'trickle up' politics
Sen. Joyce Broadsword has given us an example of conservative Republican “trickle up” tax cuts. HB 599 will repeal property tax on business equipment, saving business $120 million a year. That is money that goes to schools. Sen. Broadsword says that the general fund will pick up the slack. But let's do the math. Business pays all this property tax, but pays no more than 20 percent of general fund taxes (income and sales tax). So 80 percent of that tax will be paid by us, the individual taxpayers of Idaho. That's trickle up tax policy.

How a bad idea became a bad law
Several years ago the insurance companies in Idaho devised a way to fleece tens of millions from Idaho people having construction work done. They co-opted popular sentiment of people clamoring for protection from unscrupulous contractors and, with the Legislature in hand, provided a false sense of security. Our senators and representatives proudly supported the bill, claiming it would provide protection at almost no cost to the consumer.

Vote only way to fund capital improvements
Earlier this year, a group of concerned citizens conducted a thorough review of our local schools. They found all the school buildings in the district have safety and deferred maintenance issues. Most need heating and wiring improvements. Two schools cannot adequately house the students they are meant to service. They approached the district's school board and presented their findings. They showed that putting off deferred maintenance needs, and putting out “fires” as they arise, actually moves funds away from educational needs. They recommended that the school board present a special plant facilities levy to the community.

Get facts straight on why charges were dropped
Do you call it justice when false accusations of indecent exposure are made about me? Both counts of indecent exposure were dropped due to questions of credibility on the plaintive's part. There were no questions of credibility on my part as I passed a polygraph test.
Race, gender, religion are not the issue
People and their values are the real issue. Elliot Spitzer is a person who neglected to heed his values and was exposed. I do not care about his race or religion, as they are not to blame for his current problems and rightfully so. Michael Vick and his illegal dog fighting activities are what created his demise. Poor values and poor judgements landed him in prison.
