Skill, knowledge, and an ability to work with others and to be a leader are not mutually exclusive traits that only nasty people possess. Nice guys are perfectly capable of getting the job done but with no need for a “MASH” unit to handle the casualties.

Dan McDonald’s remarks at a public meeting, which were released last week, should be concerning to Bonner County residents. Several people were voicing concerns about silica emissions from proposed Hi-Test smelter blowing toward their homes. McDonald’s exact words were: “if you don’t like this in your backyard, I get that,” but “right now real estate is jacked,” “you could make a ton of money and move someplace else.” Seriously? This is callous and dismissive coming from a public figure. No surprise, the immediate response from a man present was, “I don’t want to run away. I love it here!”

Dan McDonald has slandered a sovereign nation who has a strong record of reputable and respected business dealings in the region. Listen to Dan’s own words and you will realize he was clearly speaking about the Kalispel Tribe of Indians because the subject being discussed was the proposed smelter. McDonald’s claims of the Tribe taking kickbacks is ironic because the Tribe’s successful and sound business dealings has seen millions of dollars donated to several charitable causes in Spokane and Pend Oreille counties. Google the Kalispel Charitable Fund and see for yourself. They are a small Tribe but employ close to 1,500 people. It is my pleasure to be among the many local residents who are supporting Dan McDonald for Bonner County commissioner. Dan has done a great job in his first term and his knowledge and appreciation for the Constitution, with an emphasis on the First and Second amendments, is key to my endorsement. Commissioner McDonald has made, and continues to make, many improvements to our county. In these improvements, fiscal responsibility and the needs of the residents are two things I have seen Commissioner McDonald maintain as his priorities.

Last spring, I watched as Dan McDonald ignored, twisted and made up facts about wilderness to defeat the non-binding vote on Scotchman Peak. After 40 years as a forester and natural resource manager working with the science and politics of natural resource management, I noted how the misinformation was undeniable.

One of the central tenets of Steve Lockwood’s campaign is that he wants to “bring better-paying jobs to Bonner County.” If he’s serious about that pledge, then why does Mr. Lockwood outsource the buying and printing of his campaign signs outside of Bonner County? It’s a question every voter should be asking him. And the proof is in his campaign expenditure filings, where his total contributions amount to approximately three times the average for a local commissioner’s race.

The criticism I’ve read or heard of Dan McDonald is that he isn’t a people person (a nice guy). What this county needs is not a “nice” guy but a commissioner who works hard for the benefit of the people of this county. We need a commissioner who has a record of strong leadership in spending the people’s money wisely, making tough decisions on issues that have long-term effects on this county, and maybe even the state and nation.

Commissioner Dan McDonald has done so many times over. From trimming the county budget by nearly $12 million, to fighting on behalf of the rights of all the county property owners, Dan has shown his constituents that he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty on behalf of all the county’s residents.

Sixty-two thousand of our fellow Idahoans do not have access to insured health care because they fall in the “heath care gap.” These are hard-working adults who do not have employer-provided plans. They work in food service, farming, forestry, construction and office work. According to the health care rules, they make too much money to qualify for Medicaid and not enough to qualify for insurance on the Your Health Idaho Exchange (Obamacare). Thirty-three states have closed this coverage gap by using an existing program and expanding Medicaid to the uninsured. Idaho can close the gap on Nov. 6 by supporting Proposition 2 at the polls.

There is a difference between saying “… more than half of Medicaid expansion recipients nationwide don’t work” and “… many adults in the so-called Medicaid gap do, in fact, work.” These two presentations are found in an Idaho Statesman article by Melissa Davlin (Sept. 6, 2018). They illustrate the divisions found in so much civil, and uncivil discourse today. An attempt to present one side of any issue, and in this case Idaho’s Proposition 2, on this year’s ballot, is anticipated to meet the predictable derisive innuendo spewed out by too many opponents. several insights, from one side of the issue are as follows:

Certain snapshots of our lives we remember, especially if they are traumatic. I remember when I was told that my best friend of four years had died. I remember who told me, where we were and how my mother remained dry-eyed and that I did for about a half-day. I don’t remember my friend’s funeral. I don’t remember what time of year it was. I remember when my little sister had an allergy attack and had to go to the hospital. I know it was in the middle of the night and I remember what house we were living in at the time. I don’t remember how long she was in the hospital. I remember my mother having a stroke and being taken to Spokane and then San Francisco. I remember my grandmother coming to stay with us while she was gone. I remember her visit as lasting two months. It was actually a week.

A few thoughts on Snow Ghost's replacement
I love skiing at Schweitzer. I moved to Sandpoint and Schweitzer about 10 years ago. Prior to that I traveled to many ski areas known for adventurous terrain. When I first came to Schweitzer I spent a lot of time riding Snow Ghost (Chair 6) and thinking about how its positioning on the mountain could be improved. I came to the conclusion that it was in just about best location it could be, fed from runs spanning almost 180 degrees of terrain from Glade-Iator to Recess. Over the years I have come to consider Snow Ghost as an iconic chair amongst snow sports resorts, given the range and diversity of terrain it serves.

I have advocated for every levy that our school district has run. This year though, I have to ask our school board to answer a few questions before I can get onboard with the next proposal. My questions all have to do with demonstrating that our district is not wasting money or refusing to look for sources of funding that do not come from local property taxes.
