Osteoporosis is major issue for post-menopausal women

SUMMARY OF ORDINANCE NO. 85

Monday, February 27
Dover Bay ready to begin construction
DOVER — North Idaho's newest destination marina will include a waterfront village with 274 boat slips, public parks and boat launch and full marine services on the north shore of the Pend Oreille River.
Woman's failure to thank teen amazes mother
I'm writing this letter in hopes of reaching one person and maybe for a few others to think about. On Feb, 15, my two daughters and a friend were at Wal-Mart. My oldest daughter while standing in the checkout line found an Panhandle State Bank envelope, she picked it up and found $2,201 in cash inside. She turned it in to the customer service counter along with her name and phone number. The following morning I also filed a police report with the Ponderay Police Department.
PAFE's contributions are positive influence in district
I would like to share with the community the tremendous benefits our district as a whole, and the Lake Pend Oreille High School in particular, is receiving from the continued support of the Panhandle Alliance for Education. The PAFE has generously funded a four-year grant, Reading Partnership for Maximum Success, designed to significantly improve reading instruction and student achievement K-12. The total grant nears half a million dollars and proves PAFE's dedication and commitment to furthering education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District.
It's nice to see legislators helping students, teachers
It's always surprised me, the almost lackadaisical approach toward funding education that the state of Idaho has taken over the years.
Are America's actions based on the money?
Briefly mentioned, but set aside, is an even more formidable reason for hostilities with Saddam by the Bush administration. It is all about keeping the U.S. dollar as the official and preeminent currency of the world, more especially when purchasing oil.

Opponents of rec district saw it exactly like it was
Following an overwhelming defeat (88 percent) Pend Oreille Recreation Tax District backers have vowed to bring their ridiclous boondoggle before the voters again.
Memorial Field should not fall on LPOSD's shoulders
With due respect to everyone involved when I read "Sandpoint offers LPOSD lease on Memorial Field" in the Bonner County Daily Bee (Feb. 10, 2006), I couldn't help but wonder if Ray Miller, Mayor of Sandpoint and Kim Woodruff, Parks and Recreation director were out of town all week having pizza. The statement that the use of a "base of property owners to generate funds … through a bond or a plant facility levy" is counter-productive towards property owners who just mandated "no new property taxes" within an election held this last week. It sure sounds as if the city fathers of Sandpoint abandoned the 50-year-old structure a long time ago and decided to wash their hands of it by moving the tax burden to a different group and giving up a 50-year commitment to it's own community that it didn't keep up in the first place. They justify their behavior by calling it "subsidizing for years" and put it on your table at the last moment hoping you'll forget your responsibility to the other communities of the district.
Make it your business to get informed about candidates
It will soon be time to decide for whom you want to cast your vote.

Spencer, others deserve thanks from taxpayers
Once again, the people of Bonner County have put to rout a misguided individual trying his best to raid our pocketbooks. Thankfully, there are a great many who take an interest in putting people like this in their place.Larry Spencer, who took it upon himself to mail out information on this taxing district, deserves a hearty vote of thanks for his oversight of the proposal. He spent many dollars to get this information out to us. There were many others who took the time to express their views on this. Well done, Bonner County. As dumb as we, collectively, sometimes are, it's still quite hard to get something this outrageous past us. I don't argue that the area is in need of a place for the kids to gather, but it should be a facility that is not a continual burden on the taxpayers.Once again, a big thank you to the voters of Bonner County.ROBERT W. Spend time on real issues, not on judging others
A trip to my local video store proved interesting the other day. In a conversation about how many horrible movies there were, I mentioned that I would be glad when the Oscars were over and a few good movies would come out on video. The owner let me know he wouldn't be carrying Brokeback Mountain. He was " not into alternative lifestyles."This got me to thinking. I guess there's nothing alternative about the lifestyles of chain saw murderers, or committers of genocide or men who drive around California drinking wine or bank robbers or people abandoned in airports because their country no longer exists or drug smugglers or hit men or creatures from outer space. Well, you get the picture. What nonsense! I suppose the next thing he'd have been telling me is that God doesn't approve of gay men. I don't know about your God, but my God does not approve of murdering people with chain saws. Nor does my God approve of us judging others.Seems to me, with so much wrong in this country, there are things we could be more concerned with then who loves who and how. Seems to me, it would be more productive for us to be concerned with the hard working people in this country that are poor and getting poorer. Seems to me it would be more productive for us to be concerned with the condition of the air we breath and the water we drink. God would approve.PARISE WHITLEYCareywood

Message center connects legislators, Idaho residents
As the Idaho legislative session is at a critical point, many bills many bills affecting each of you will be coming to a vote. This year, perhaps more than most years, there will be issues which will affect you for years to come.
Traditional hunting threatened in state
There is a movement in Idaho to increase landowner appreciation tags from 10 percent to 25 percent. Currently, these tags are set aside so family members of ranches can apply for free game tags. There is nothing wrong with a ranch family getting a free elk tag for allowing wild herds to use their lands. Some people want to drastically change this.
Legislature needs to speed up efforts on property-tax reform
There is a lot of cynicism surrounding property tax relief proposals being debated by the Legislature this session. Many in the area doubt legislators will approve any significant relief. In fact, some are launching an initiative to put before voters in the fall.

It was a sad day when we, as Americans, decided that we had to have laws to protect us from discrimination. Voters made it clear
Robert Pierce has repeatedly made vague accusations of misinformation and scare tactics, but provided no specific examples of inaccuracies in my letters. If alerting people of a tax proposal that most people find frightening is a scare tactic, I suppose he could argue that I have attempted to scare people by providing them with the facts.

Liberals' bias will not allow them to see truth
Some thoughts on liberal bias in media and our president:
Why is county using wrong data on airport?
Question: How can Bonner County commissioners use incorrect data to justify airport expansion and solicit FAA grants to pay for expansion without questioning the airport master plan and the airport advisory board about the source of the data, knowing that the expansion will result in much higher maintenance costs to Bonner County taxpayers for the airport?

Out-of-state developers should pay their share
Millions more dollars for education, property tax relief, or whatever would be forthcoming if the Idaho State Tax Commission would take more interest in collecting state income tax due under Idaho law, specifically from non-residents. Reference Idaho Code Section 63-3026A (3) Rule 260 and also 264 (01) re: non-residents taxable on income from Idaho sources. Specifically, gains on sales of Idaho property and interest earned on seller-financed sales of Idaho property by non-residents are clearly subject to Idaho state income tax. There has been very little effort made to collect this tax, or even to advise non-residents that they are required to file. This is true even though residents of states such as California that have state income tax, are in most cases, allowed a credit against their home state income tax based on the amounts paid.

Rec center facility is all about the community
I am a 67-year-old woman on a fixed income of $471 a month and I am writing about the recreation district vote. You may be surprised that I am not following the lead of so many self-centered locals who have been whining and sniveling about $8 month going toward making our community better. They are pretending it is a bad idea when, in fact, they are simply being cheap.
'Socialistic' way of helping ends up hurting the poor
Why do rec district proponents (Jan. 26) suggest an average family will pay $3-$4/month when the official proposal is up to 60 percent higher (and applies to every $100,000 of taxable value)? What happened to their $5-$11/month increase for the average family (Nov. 3, 2005, and Dec. 10, 2006)? Why not run the numbers for property that could easily increase to $400,000 without an increase in the owner's income?

Proposed center benefits community, youngsters
I am in favor of the Sandpoint Centre. The people volunteering their time to create this vision should be commended! Though I'm not excited about new taxes, I feel the community center that has been proposed is a good use of taxpayer funds. There are numerous communities, larger and smaller, that have similar amenities for their residents. We have two young children that are a constant reminder to us that in the long time between summers there are few options for recreation when it is soggy outside.

Raising taxes for center is not a good idea
Please don't forget to vote on Feb. 7. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income. Raising the taxes for a sports center is not a good idea. From what I have learned since it was first proposed, it would be better for the sponsors to put their money together and built it for the private enterprise that it could be. There are too many people who live so far away that just getting to the facility would be a hardship. Please vote no.
Center would benefit area's businesses
I am writing in support of the effort to build a community multi-use centre in Sandpoint. I have many friends in Sandpoint and have visited several times a year for over 20 years.
